2 sentenced for numerous local VT burglaries | October 15, 2017 By TIMOTHY LAROCHE tlaroche@eagletimes.com WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Two Vermont men pleaded guilty in Windsor County Superior Court to burglary charges following a string of burglaries in September 2016. Most recently, Bradley Elliott, 33, of Mount Holly, pleaded guilty on Sept. 5 to three counts of burglary, receiving a sentence of four years and six months. Mitchell Horton, 30, of Cavendish, pleaded guilty on June 6 to two counts of burglary, receiving a sentence of five years. Springfield Police became aware of the burglaries on Sept. 28, 2016, after an employee at Kwik Stop in Springfield reported that the store had been burglarized during the night. The front door to the store was smashed, and the safe and video monitoring system were missing. On Sept. 30, Ludlow Police reported to Springfield Det. Shaun Smith that a safe had been found in Cavendish. Smith and Det. Anthony Moriglioni went to the location at which the safe had been found and they discovered a cement pad where Horton had previously dropped a welder following a 2012 burglary. The safe was identified as belonging to Kwik Stop. During interviews with associates of Horton, police learned that he had been involved in a burglary in Ludlow. A video captured during the Kwik Stop burglary led to another associate identifying Horton and a man named “Brad” to police. Piecing together information known about “Brad’s” girlfriend, police were led to suspect that Elliott was involved with the case. Over the course of the ensuing investigation, Horton and Elliott were alleged to have burglarized Kwik Stop, Wellwood Orchards in Weathersfield, Sam’s Steakhouse in Ludlow, Okemo Valley Golf Course and P&M Auto. Video showing the alleged perpetrators of the wellwood burglary depict two men wearing the same clothing shown in the videos of the Kwik Stop incident, affidavits said. Statements implicating Elliott and Horton in the Sam’s Steakhouse incident were considered consistent, affidavits said, and two sets of footprints were found outside of the building. The P&M Auto burglary featured similar methods of burglary as those seen on the video of the Kwik Stop burglary. And a money pouch used in the Okemo Valley Golf Course burglary, according to affidavits, fit the description that an associate of Horton had described as belonging to Horton. Several people interviewed by police also alleged that Horton and Elliott had bragged about committing the burglaries, affidavits said. On Dec. 19, 2016, Elliott was charged with six counts of burglary. On Sept. 5, a plea agreement was accepted by Judge Timothy Tomasi, and Elliott pleaded guilty to three of the six charges. The other three burglary charges were dismissed by the state. On April 13, Horton was also charged with six counts of burglary. Judge Theresa DiMauro accepted a change of plea from Horton on June 6, when he pleaded guilty to two charges. The remaining four charges of burglary were dismissed by the state.
