SPRINGFIELD, Vt. – The fifth annual Fastest Kid in Town race was another huge success. Seventy-eight children ages 5-12 competed in 100 and 200-yard races at Riverside Middle School during the 35th annual Vermont Apple Festival over Columbus Day weekend. Sponsored by Springfield Medical Care Systems, the Fastest Kid in Town Race began five years ago highlighting the importance of physical activity for young children. A few of the competitors were returning for their fourth race and were joined by equally enthusiastic younger siblings. Four age-category races took place following short pre-race warm-up exercises. The two youngest divisions raced a quick 100 yards across the field. The fastest five and six-year-olds were each younger siblings of experienced competitors, Malachi Bactad and Adela Fuentes, both of Springfield, Vt. Fuentes has some big shoes to fill, as her brother Mateo Fuentes added a fourth medal to his collection – and title of Fastest Boy – in the 7 and 8-year old division. fastest kid Malachi Bactad crossing the finish line. The final two races consisted of a fast-paced jaunt down the field – and back – to complete 200 yards. Carmine Bactad of Springfield, Vt. and Isabella West of Charlestown, N.H. claimed victory in the 9 and 10-year-old group. Twelve-year old Tanner Gintof and eleven-year old Molly Tennis, both of Springfield, Vt. broke the white finish line tape as the fastest kids in their age division. This is Tennis’s second year standing on the winner’s podium, so we hope she trains over the coming months for her last chance to defend the title at next year’s race. Medals were awarded to the fastest boy and girl of each age group and all participants received a Fastest Kid t-shirt.
