(Richard Fellenz photo) SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — The Springfield Lions Club Visioneers are at it again. During the 2016-2017 school year, the Springfield Lions have screened 4000 children for vision problems in the greater Springfield area. Now that school is back in session, the Visioneers are out screening more children. Spot Vision Screening is an amazing way to quickly screen for vision problems. Using a camera-like handheld device, vision screenings take seconds to identify possible problems such as near- and far-sightedness, unequal refraction power, eye structure problems, pupil size deviations, and eye misalignment. Spot Vision can screen patients aged 6 months through adult. Patients do not need to be able to read or speak so it is easily used with non-verbal children. This is important because vision problems can be detected early and possibly corrected. Approximately 300 to 400 vision issues are detected and referred for further treatment each year. Springfield Lions Club Visioneers spend countless volunteer hours screening children in the greater Springfield Area. During the 2016-2017 school year, the club has screened 4000 students in the following Vermont towns: Bellows Falls, Brownsville, Cavendish, Chester, Grafton, Hartford, Hartland, Londonderry, Ludlow, Mount Holly, Reading, Saxton River, Springfield, Townsend, Weathersfield, Westminster and Windsor. The Spot Vision Screening Program, which started in Springfield, screened 19,000 children in 102 communities during the last school year. Community support of the Lions Club Fishing Derby, Christmas Tree Sale and other Lions fundraisers help pay for this service. The Springfield Lions Club was founded in 1937 and has been serving the greater Springfield area for eighty years. It's a great program, and many thanks to the Lions for spending the money to get the best gear available! They're a credit to the town.
