SPRINGFIELD, Vt. – “This team has made Springfield excited about football again. They have shown some pride in getting it turned around. We’re not making as many mistakes. We’re playing some great defense,” Rich Saypack said about his Cosmo football team, who never trailed in knocking off higher seeded Bellows Free Academy of Fairfax last Saturday on the road 18-3. Neither team scored in the first quarter, but the Green and White found their way into intermission with a 6-0 advantage after Kyle Monier found Ryan McSally on a 30-yard touchdown play with 7:55 minutes showing on the clock in quarter number two. “I told them at halftime, we are playing great defense, keep it up and we will come away with the win,” Saypack said. BFA went on a long sustained drive to start the second half, which looked like it would make or break the game for both sides. They controlled the ball just short of 11 minutes, until the Cosmos defense stood up and stole the game. The Springfield D put the clamps on the ten minutes of ball control, forced a fourth down, and held the Bullets to a field goal and held on to a 6-3 lead. “That was the win right there.” The two teams then traded possessions and the Cosmos took advantage of their second one and LaChapelle found the end zone with 5:43 remaining in the contest to give the Springfield team a two score advantage. BFA had to go for it on fourth down on their next possession and failed and the Cosmos once again had LaChapelle go 2 yards moments later, for the final points of the game. The Springfield win assures this group of Cosmo gridders a three-game winning streak and a date with powerful number one seed Windsor. The Yellow Jackets handled Springfield with ease on opening day 53-22, but this is definitely an improved team facing the top seed and Saypack is preparing his squad for the best outcome possible. “We just need the perfect game,” the coach said.
