Celebrate history of Stellafane

Love viewing the night sky? Wish you had a telescope? Ever heard of "Stellafane" or wondered what it actually is? Join presenters at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 25 at the Springfield Town Library to learn about and celebrate the rich history of Stellafane presented by amateur telescope maker and Stellafane member, Rick Hunter.

The Springfield Telescope Makers, Inc. is an active Amateur Astronomy and Telescope Making club in Springfield. Founded in 1923 as an outgrowth of Russell W. Porter's original class in telescope making, the club built its pink clubhouse, named "Stellafane," in that same year. Publicized in the Scientific American, the telescope making hobby became a popular movement and in 1926 the group started the annual Stellafane Convention, which continues to the present.

The 2018 Stellafane Convention will be held Aug. 8, 9, and 10. All are welcome to attend the talk to learn more about the club and the Convention.

The library program is free, accessible to all, and open to the public. The Springfield Town Library is located at 43 Main St., Springfield. For more information, call the library at (802) 885-3108.

  1. Great event, probably the largest in Springfield each year. If you have never been to the convention, you will find it very interesting. It is big. Ten stars and a heck of a lot more at night!!

  2. This is a great event for Springfield. That is unless you live on a road used to reach Stellafane as some of the attendees have no idea there are even speed limits on our roads.
