The Town, Gurney Brothers, Local Motion, and Springfield on the Move are installing a temporary, landscaped "pop-up" this week on Main Street between Valley Street & Summer Street.
This will give them (and you) the opportunity to review & fine-tune the changes anticipated when the actual project begins in several weeks. The pop-up will come down on Friday, August 3.

So, am I to understand that they're creating a landscaped parkway in place of the bike lanes?
ReplyDeleteOk, I just went downtown and looked at it. If they are planning to put a landscaped parkway where the bike lanes now are, I see a disaster in the making. They will be taking an area that's already congested, and making it worse. I see bicycles careening out in front of cars, the bus blocking traffic at the bus stop, and maybe worse. RETHINK THIS ONE, GUYS!
ReplyDeleteI neither understand what the pop up is or what the "anticipated actual project" is. Can someone educate me please? I drove thru town and just saw cones and planters...
ReplyDeleteSpringfield On The Move explains it this way: "It’s a simulation of the curb bump out project that will be taking place in the near future. The purpose of the simulation is to see if any of the design needs to be tweaked before construction begins. The purpose of the construction is to calm traffic and make the area safer for pedestrians."
DeleteUm, what pedestrians? What traffic is there to calm? What a waste of taxpayer money.
DeleteIs this just another way to put money in Gurney's pockets? Ridiculous,
ReplyDeleteSpringfield On The Move and other agencies with the town's best interest in mind should really take a good look at what they feel the town needs. We need PEOPLE to WANT to come to town and STAY in this town, and STIMULATE an economy be it industry, the arts, or something better then what is being presented. Hay bales, cones, and plants will not be a draw, nor will a calm street with no stores or anything interesting to see. This is a joke.
ReplyDeleteI have to completely agree with 4:53. What an assinine way to spend money and screw up the current traffic. As a local business owner I'd rather see them put there efforts toward something to draw more business into town before we worry about these less important feel good projects.....
ReplyDeletewell you know the gurneys must need some more money. i wonder when spring ding will learn. from the new high school all the way to this.
ReplyDeleteI just love it when people on this blog complain when the town does something to make downtown more attractive. They say that Springfield needs to do more to "attract businesses," yet can't say exactly what that would be. Maybe some type of "business attracter" that we could spray on the empty buildings? Maybe we could then say "Here, business business!" Sprucing up downtown is probably the ONLY thing we can do to attract businesses! That and tear down the slum housing on Summer and River streets!
ReplyDeleteHow about not taxing businesses to the point they have to close their doors? How about the judicial system locks away some of these druggies? How about making it harder to get on welfare and give people more incentive to work?
DeleteTim, aside from being the standard right-wing, knee-jerk talking points, NONE of the things you mentioned are within the control of the town of Springfield. The businesses that left Springfield did so for a variety of reasons. Rest assured, the CITIES they went to ALL have high taxes, drug addicts, and people on welfare. That didn't stop them from moving there! This town is just too small and isolated to be a major industrial center. Period. In order to attract modern, tech-oriented companies to move here, you have to attract modern, tech-oriented people. That means making the place look good! Tearing down the blighted properties downtown, and replacing them with nice public spaces is a must-do. Getting rid of the scroungey-looking idiots I see downtown some days would help, but that would include an awful lot of conservatives!
Deleteso making it pretty will work. i dont think so but what should we expect from a bunch of day dream believers. tim welfare was reformed under billy i cant keep it in my pants clinton. if you do your home work you will find out that they can only collect for 5 years in their entire life. now disability is the new scam.
DeleteAs I said originally, 6:19, where are your ideas? All I hear from the right is a lot of whining, and no solutions. Is that because your simple-minded, knee-jerk mentality is the problem? YES! By the way, e.e. cummings YOU AIN'T!
DeleteBump outs will be a traffic and snow removal hazard. Hope someone didn't get paid 10 grand to design and draw such a plan.
ReplyDeleteA curb extension (or also neckdown, kerb extension, bulb-out, bump-out, kerb build-out, nib, elephant ear, curb bulge,"curb bulb" and blister) is a traffic calming measure, primarily used to extend the sidewalk, reducing the crossing distance and allowing pedestrians about to cross and approaching vehicle drivers to see each other when vehicles parked in a parking lane would otherwise block visibility.
