Humane society seeks food, toy donations By STEPHEN SEITZ Special to the Eagle Times Dec 13, 2018 0 Facebook Twitter Email Whiskey Whiskey is a German shepherd recently adopted by Springfield Human Society Director Anne Eddy. STEPHEN SEITZ SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — The Springfield Humane Society is trying to bring Christmas to the kennels. To that end, they have launched a holiday donation drive. They’re looking for pet food, treats, and toys. “They don’t know it’s Christmas, but I do,” said volunteer Lorraine Zigman. “Our main goal is to raise awareness and donations. I like to help out when I can.” There are certainly enough adoptable pets. “Right now, we have 18 cats, nine dogs and 15 bunnies,” said Anne Eddy, the society’s executive director. “Today, we’re getting some turtles.” Another reason for the donation drive is to let people know about the society’s programs for pet owners. Among those programs are a free spaying service for cats and dogs which have recently had litters; help for people who can’t afford to keep their pets; volunteer opportunities; low-cost spay and neuter clinics for cats and rabbits; dog rental for those who can’t have one at home; educational talks, and the Princess Fund. “That’s for pets which have certain medical needs,” Eddy said. Eddy said the society also works with police in cases of cruelty and neglect, and free pet training; Eddy said she is a certified dog trainer. The society’s programs even include mental health. “What we’ll do is freeze some peanut butter and put it in a toy,” Eddy said. “The dog will spend all day trying to get it out. That keeps their brains active and reduces stress. Everything we can do for their mental health, we do.” The shelter has taken in all kinds of animals; farm animals, pet rats, hamsters, and once even a boa constrictor someone had abandoned by the side of the road. One item the shelter is in constant need of is plastic shopping bags, used to pick up after the dogs. The Springfield Humane Society was founded in 1941. Today, it serves the towns of Andover, Baltimore, Cavendish, Chester, Grafton, Londonderry, Ludlow, Weathersfield, Weston and Windsor, as well as Springfield. Donations may be brought to the society’s building at 401 Skitchewaug Trail on Route 143 in Springfield. The society has a Facebook page as well as a website, spfldhumane.org.
