Springfield runs past Oxbow, 58-41 Christopher Shaban Dec 14, 2018 0 Chamberlain Springfield's #5 Ashley Chamberlain flies past Oxbow's #22 Tiffany Longmoore for a layup during second half action. The Cosmos broke open a close game with a strong press and ended up downing Oxbow 58-41 Friday night to improve to 1-0. Christopher Shaban SPRINGFIELD, Vt. - The Springfield Cosmos shrugged off a lethargic first half and turned to their press to open up a close game, running away with a 58-41 win over Oxbow on Friday night. The up-tempo game caused Oxbow to struggle and the fast pace enabled the Cosmos to “play to their strength,” according to Springfield head coach Joseph Costello. Neither team was able to find their shooting range as Oxbow struggled from the line, hitting only 2 of 12 in the first quarter, but Springfield rode the hot hand of Hannah Crosby to a 21-21 tie at the half as Crosby had 7 points in the first 16 minutes. After a 9-9 first quarter, Jessica Cerniglia’s three point bomb gave the Cosmos a lead they would hold onto until the final seconds of the half as the stiff Oxbow defense limited Springfield’s offensive chances. Hailey Perham’s bucket and a corner swish from Kaylee Warren gave Springfield a 4-point cushion late in the half but Oxbow wouldn’t go away. “The first half was frustrating but when we opened the second half with a press, everyone seemed to play much looser and things started to flow for us,” said Crosby after the game. Julianna Alberto-Levings opened the second half with a bang as her bucket was followed with a three pointer and hoop off the fingers of Hailey Perham, and the Cosmos were off and running. Crosby joined the party with 9 straight points, and by the end of the third quarter Springfield had opened up a 37-28 lead. “We were a nervous team in the first half but when we went into a press, the tempo really favored us and play went to our advantage,” said Costello after the game. That tempo shift enabled Springfield’s Ashley Chamberlin to find room to roam and resulted in 5 quick points as the lead ballooned to 42-28. Not only was Springfield disrupting the Oxbow flow, Gabriella Wardwell took over the paint area collecting 6 rebounds in the final quarter and scoring 5 points, limiting Oxbow’s easy buckets. Crosby would cap off the night with a buzzer beater to make the final score 58-41 as Springfield poured in 21 points over the final 8 minutes to put the game on ice. Crosby led all scorers with 21 points while Wardwell and Perham both chipped in with 9 points each. Oxbow was led by the freshman Emma Parkin who ended the night with 9 points. Springfield shot 10 for 16 from the line while Oxbow hit 16 of 28 attempts. In JV action, Springfield won a thriller 43-42. Megan Stagner led the way with 20 points while Natalia Dorcely finished with 10 points.
