Stanley Palowski, 95, of Springfield, died December 28, 2014. He was born in Springfield, the son of Adam and Pearl (Chichanowicz) Palowski. He attended Springfield schools. He was married to Ruth A. Spencer in 1940, she predeceased him in 1983. Mr. Palowski worked for the Springfield Foundry and the Bryant Grinder Corp. for several years. He was later employed as a carpenter with Barlow Construction for 35 years, retiring in 1982. He was a partner in a Christmas tree plantation in Weston. Survivors include his son, Thomas E. Palowski of Haines City, Fla., his brother, William Palowski of Sebastian, Fla. [photo]

Gary E. L’Heureux, 77, of Springfield, died December 23, 2014. He was born in Claremont, New Hampshire. He graduated from Stevens High School in 1956 and then served four years with the U.S. Navy as a parachute rigger. He married Beverly Hall on October 29, 1960. He was a “milkman” for Idlenot Dairy for 33 years. He retired from H.P. Hood in 2001. Survivors include his wife, Beverly; his sister Joan Mack of Maryville, Tennessee; his sister Linda McKay of Simsbury Connecticut. His brother, David L’Heureux of Cornish, New Hampshire; his daughter, Lorri LaPlante of Springfield; his daughter Kim L’Heureux of Scarborough, Maine and his Daughter Jessica Lockerby of Westminster West.

Arline M. Picard, 85, of Springfield, died December 16, 2014. She was born in Springfield, Vt., daughter of Albert and Mildred (Needham) Cole. She graduated from Springfield High School, class of 1949. She was married to her high school sweetheart, Leroy Picard in 1950 and lived in Springfield for the next 37 years. Arline volunteered for a variety of organizations, most notably the Springfield Hospital Auxiliary. She was also an active member of the Congregational Church. When her husband, Leroy, retired from Fellows Gear Shaper in 1987, they moved to West Palm Beach, Fla. In 2004, they moved to Rutland, Vt., to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren. Survivors include her 2 daughters, Pamela Hamilton and Cheryl Hryckiewicz of Morgan, Vt.

James A. Durham, 82, of Springfield, died December 15, 2014. Born in East Poultney, he graduated from Poultney High School, and entered the Army after graduation. In 1960, he married the former Lucille Woodbury. They lived most of their married life in Springfield, except for a few years when they lived in Essex Junction. Mr. Durham was a truck driver for the Swift Meat Packing Co., a short-order cook for Howard Johnson’s, a meat cutter, a photographer and video producer for sales at Textron, machinist at Jones and Lamson and a computer chipboard maker at IBM. Survivors include his wife, Lucille of Springfield; his sons, the Rev. DePorres (Charles) Durham of Madison, Wisc., Matthew Durham of Burlington; and his brother, Edward Durham of Poultney. [photo]

Helen Alexander, 96, a longtime resident of Rutland and a former resident of Springfield, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014. She was born in Springfield. Mrs. Alexander was active in RSVP and the Foster Grandparent programs in Rutland for several years. Survivors include cousins.

Nancy Lee Crawford, 74, of Springfield, died December 2, 2014.

Louis Hormisdas Belisle, 81, formerly of Springfield, died November 29, 2014. Mr. Belisle was born in Randolph. After graduating from Randolph High School in 1951, he worked at Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield. While working, he obtained an education in mechanical design, drafting and advanced mathematics at Dartmouth College evening programs. He married Shirley Comstock in 1953, raising five children. Mrs. Belisle died in 1991. Mr. Belisle married Phyllis Maxwell in 1994. He worked at Fellows for 40 years, first as a draftsman then as a gear cutter designer. He retired in the early 1990s and started a consulting and sales company to the gear industry with his gear cutter design software. He was a member of the Springfield Community Players. HHe coached Little League and umpired American Legion and other leagues in the area. He was starter at many track meets and at the Springfield Swim Team meets. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Brownsville, Texas; his five children, Katherine Hansen of Maynard, Mass; Jeffrey of Westmoreland, N.H.; Laurie of Mystic, Conn.; Sharon of Exeter, N.H.; and Gregory of San Antonio, Texas. Matthew M. Stevens, 54, of South Reading, died November 21, 2014. He was born in Springfield, the son of Morris C. and Barbara (Matthews) Stevens. He graduated from Black River High School in Ludlow and attended Johnson State College. He was a self-employed carpenter and painter in the area for many years. He did plumbing and electrical work, and was an artist. Survivors include his mother, Barbara of South Reading; a son, Justin Stevens of Springfield; a daughter, Elizabeth Palargo of Quechee; two sisters, Peggy Stevens of South Reading and Pauline Bostock of Ludlow.

Beth Rogers Sanborn, 92, of Springfield, died November 21, 2014. She was born in Tunbridge. In 1944, she married Donald Eugene Sanborn. Survivors include a daughter, Mary S. Cross and five grandchildren. [photo]

Rev. Carroll E. Langley, 81, of Lowell, Maine, died November 21, 2014. He was born in Frankfort Maine and grew up in Lowell Maine where he went to school. He went on to join the United States Marine Corp at age 19. Carroll married Lorain S. (Mitchell) Langley in 1954. After working many years with Bridge Construction he went into a full time ministry. Carroll and Lorain started their ministry in Lagrange Maine and served there for 12 years. They then went to Springfield Vermont and ministered for 18 years. As a symbol of his ministry and commitment to serve his Lord, you will find a tall lit-up blue cross in front of both churches where he ministered. At retirement they went into the R.V. ministry for six years traveling across the United States helping churches and colleges with any needs they may have had. Carroll was an ordained minister of the Assemblies of God for over 50 years, where he served as presbyter and alternate for several years in the Northern New England District. Survivors include his wife Lorain; Sister, Jacquelyn Greenleaf of Cape Elizabeth, Me.; His Children, Victoria J. Gordon of Kennebunk, Me., Debra J. Salisbury and Pamela J. Frederic Paul Koledo, 77, of Springfield, died November 17, 2014. He was born in Springfield, the son of John and Helen (Skill) Koledo. He was a 1955 graduate of Springfield High School and worked at Jones & Lamson for 22 years. Mr. Koledo was then a self-employed real estate broker and insurance salesman for another 25 years. He served in the Vermont National Guard for 15 years, attaining the rank of sergeant first class, and served six months of active duty in Fort Jackson, S.C. Mr. Koledo was a lifetime resident of Springfield and volunteered for several organizations. He served as a member of the Springfield Housing Authority for 32 years and as chairman for 26 years; he was a member of Springfield Housing Unlimited for 20 years and chairman for 18 years. He also was a member of the Lions Club and the Springfield Alumni Association. Mr. Koledo enjoyed skiing, fishing and hunting and golf. He was one of the founding members of Crown Point Country Club and won the Vermont State Left-Handed Golf Championship several times. He was the oldest player to win the club championship at age 70. In August, he sank a 50-foot putt to win $5,000 at the annual Chamber of Commerce tournament. He was instrumental in the construction of a new clubhouse at Crown Point Country Club. He also organized the Polish Open for more than 30 years. He served as a director of the Vermont Golf Association for 15 years. Mr. Koledo is survived by his wife, Carol (Baker) Koledo; his daughter Heather of Weathersfield; his daughter Nancy of Hudson, Fla.; two sisters, Mary-Jane Roberts and Catherine Merrill, both of Springfield; two brothers, Peter Koledo and Stephen Ankuda, also of Springfield; grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Dr. Joseph A. Mangano, 86, of Raleigh, N.C., died November 7, 2014. He was born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., to Angelo and Maria (Montalto) Mangano, the youngest of 10 children. He graduated from Columbia University and New York Medical College, then served as a captain in the Army Medical Corps in Germany for two years. From 1969 to 1974, he practiced internal medicine in Springfield, Vt., and was on staff at Springfield Hospital. He maintained a home in Springfield ever since, and made many visits to Vermont, even after moving to North Carolina, where he practiced medicine until 2011. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, the former Eleanor Landino, along with four children Joseph of Ocean City, N.J.; Maria of Durham; Eleanor and William of Charleston, W.V. [photo]

Rebecca Ellen Farrar, 90, of Springfield, died October 29, 2014. Rebecca grew up and lived most of her life on the family farm — Fair View Farm in West Chester, VT. She loved farm life and helping her brothers with the dairy operation. She attended Chester High School. Over the years, she worked for many families when called to assist with housework or child care. Her last years were lived at the Whitcomb Building in Springfield and at Brookwood Estate in North Springfield. Survivors include her sister Caroline F. Eddy of Chester. [photo]

Harold M. Noyes, 97, of Springfield, died October 26, 2014. Harold was born in Wilder. After 13 years of formal schooling, Harold worked for Covell the Painter for two years. He was a draftsman then mechanical engineer at Jones & Lamson Manufacturing in Springfield for 45 years. During those years at Jones & Lamson, Harold belonged to and was an officer in the American Society of Tool and Manufacturing Engineers (ASTME). Harold was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Nicholson Noyes. He is survived by their son, Steve Noyes, who resides in Laurel, Maryland. His second wife, Shirley H. Noyes, passed away in 2013. They would have been married 50 years on Aug. 8, 2014. [photo]

Keith Durand, 62, of Springfield, died October 23, 2014. Born to Conrad and Mary (May) Durand. Keith graduated from Springfield High School in 1969. He worked in many places, including Idlenot Dairy and Wiggins Block Plant, but spent a majority of his working life at General Electric in Rutland, Vermont. Survivors include his daughters, Olga Carey and Stacia Cheney; his mother, Mary Durand; and his brother, Wayne Durand. [photo]

Sylvia Jean Campbell, 72, of Springfield, died October 25, 2014. She was born in Bellows Falls, the daughter of Nelson W. and Bernice D. ( Hance ) Dennett. She attended Springfield schools and graduated from Springfield High School in 1960. She also attended Community College of Vermont. She was employed for several years as a certified nursing assistant at the Hanson Court Nursing Home in Springfield. She was a teacher with the Head Start Program in Springfield and worked as a private-care nurse in the Springfield area for several years. In 1984, Sylvia married Darwin K. “Tex” Campbell in Springfield. He predeceased her on July 20, 2008. Survivors include a son, William Dennett of Springfield; three sisters, Mildred Buxton of St. Johnsbury, Patricia Comerford of Walpole, N.H., and June Theetge of Springfield.

Charlene M. Bacon, 53, of Springfield, died October 17, 2014. Charlene was born in Springfield, to Merrill (Bud) and Marjorie Buxton. She attended Springfield High School with the Class of 1979. Charlene was a loyal, loving, giving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Family was the center of her world and heart. Survivors include her husband Mark Bacon; her daughter Danielle Kim (Buxton) Garceau; her son, Jhi Justus Buxton; four brothers and one sister: John Waldo Buxton, Jay Howard Buxton, Robert Lee Buxton, all of South Carolina, Michael Ralph Buxton of Springfield and Regina Louise (Buxton) Snyder of Springfield.

Leslie “Bud” E. Fleming, 76, of Springfield, died October 17, 2014. Bud was born April 24, 1939, in Wolcott, Vermont, the son of Elmer and Catherine (Alexander) Fleming. He graduated from Hardwick Academy in 1957. Bud served in the Army as 549th Military Policeman and retired from the town of Springfield. Survivors include his wife Susan; his daughters, Carol Fleming-Gates of Bedford, New Hampshire; Leslie A. Fleming-Stearns of Burlington; and his sisters, Evelyn Cleveland and Gladys LaPlante of Springfield [photo]

Ira P. Colby Sr., 96, of Springfield, died October 16, 2014. He was born in Rumney, New Hampshire. e attended schools in Rumney and graduated from Plymouth High School, Class of 1935. He moved to Springfield in 1939 and was employed with the Fellows Gear Shaper for 43 years, retiring in 1983. After his retirement from Fellows, he owned and operated a radio and television repair business. On Aug. 10, 1941, he married Bernice “Bunny” Ray in Rumney. She predeceased him Jan. 15, 1992. He was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Springfield. He was a member of the Songsters and the senior center. He enjoyed big band music and played piano, organ and accordion. He was an avid motorcyclist and rode until he was 89 years old. Survivors include three sons, Ira P. Colby Jr. of Barrington, New Hampshire, Michael C. Colby of Walpole and Donald C. Colby of Springfield; two daughters, Holly Kingsbury and Hope Welch, both of Springfield.

Cindy Wright Rushford, 60, of Springfield, died October 8, 2014. She was born in Springfield, the daughter of Hazel Colburn Wright and Clarence Wright. She was a graduate of Peoples Academy High School in Morrisville and Seacoast Career Schools in Sanford, Maine. She cared for the elderly as a licensed nurse’s aide at nursing homes around the Springfield area. She was married in 1977 to John Rushford of Tunbridge, with whom she had two sons, Mark Rushford of Santa Cruz, Calif. and Matthew Rushford of Glendale, Ariz. Mrs. Rushford is survived by her husband, John; sons Mark and Matt; her sisters Lisa Wright Douglas of Chester and Robyn Verge of Kennebunk, Maine; brothers Brian Calvin Wright of Springfield and Greg Smith of Kansas City, Mo. Priscilla G. (Brown) Whitcomb, 86, of Springfield, died October 4, 2014. She was born in Springfield, the daughter of John and Lillian (McDonnell) Gurney. She received her schooling in Springfield and graduated from Springfield High School in 1945. She married Kenneth Brown in 1952. Priscilla was employed at Fellows Gear Shaper and later at Ralph Baker Investments, both in Springfield. She and her husband owned and operated Hoszkiewicz and Sons Market on Park Street in Springfield for four years, until Mr. Brown passed away in 1975. She moved to Sunapee in 1980, where she owned and operated Sunapee Secretarial Services. She returned to North Springfield in 1992 and married Harland E. Whitcomb in 1993. Survivors include one son, Gary K. Brown, of Perkinsville; one daughter, Wendy S. Marden of Waterville, Maine; six sisters, Barbara Newport of Windsor, Joy Harvey of Saranac Lake, New York, Carolyn Staubach of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Nancy Moore of Springfield, Laura Messier of Lyndonville, Vermont, and Harriet Abel of South Hampton, Massachusetts; three brothers, Donald Gurney of Springfield, Gordon “Sam” Gurney of Weathersfield and John Gurney of Douglas, Arizona; [photo]

Pearl J. Matulonis, 81, of Springfield, died October 2, 2014. She was born in Reading. For 22 years, she lived the life of a supportive military wife, stationed in the Midwest and on the East Coast while raising a family of three girls. She worked at Springfield Health and Rehabilitation, Bear Paw Lumber and retired from Ben & Jerry’s. Survivors include her daughters Chris Dufresne and Paula Verge, both of Springfield and Cheryl Sivewright of Florida; her brother, Paul Ahonen of Ludlow.

Leonarda A. Laskevich, 89, of Springfield, died October 2, 2014. She was born in Springfield, the daughter of Dominik and Mary ( Harevich) Laskevich. She attended Springfield schools and graduated from Springfield High School in 1942. She enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II and served with the U.S. Army Air Force. She is a charter member of the Women’s Memorial Foundation in Washington, D.C. She was a registered nurse graduating from the Mouth Sinai Hospital School of Nursing and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Teacher’s College, Columbia University NYC. Her professional career included many years as in faculty and administrative positions in schools of nursing. She authored “NLN Guide to Success on Nursing Examinations” published by the National League for Nursing. She lived in New York City and after her retirement she spent summers in Springfield. Edwin N. McGlew Jr., 92, of Weathersfield, died September 23, 2014. He was born in North Bergen, N.J. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of Reconnaissance Squadron, Photo Squadron One. He had 38 combat flights from Guadalcanal and New Guinea. In 1956, he married Ruth A. Reeth. He operated a dairy farm in Wantage, N.J., for many years, and operated Fox Ridge Range, Trap & Skeet Shoot adjacent to the farm. He moved to Vermont in September 2005. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield and a member of the VFW Post 771 in Springfield. Survivors include his wife and their seven children. [photo]

Wayne E. Griffin, 75, of Springfield, died September 24, 2014. He was born in Woodsville, N.H., the son of Harry and Esther (Copp) Griffin. He attended Springfield Schools and graduated from Springfield High School, class of 1957. In 1958, he married Patricia Sullivan. Mr. Griffin was assistant manager with First National Grocery Store for many years, was employed as plant manager for Coughlin Electric, owned and operated Chester Food Market in Chester for many years and worked in security for Ben & Jerry’s. He was a member of the Vermont National Guard 131st Engineering Unit in North Springfield. Mr. Griffin served on the Budget Advisory Committee for the town of Springfield, and served many years on the Zoning Board. Survivors include his wife, Patricia A. Griffin; one son, Wayne T. Griffin of Windsor; two daughters: Karen Johnston and Lisa Allen, also of Springfield. [photo]

Ruth F. Belden, 94, of Peterborough, N.H., died September 19, 2014. She was born in Ludlow. She graduated from Black River Academy in 1938, then Castleton Teachers College, receiving her masters from Boston University. She taught elementary school for 37 years (8 years in Ludlow, the rest in Springfield). After retiring she volunteered in Westminster at Kurn Hattin Home and Christian Academy in Claremont, NH. She was married to Carlton Stone (June 10, 1943) for 32 years until his death. She married Frank W. Belden in 1983 until his death in 1998. She sang in the choir the Calvary Baptist Church in Springfield. She is survived by a step-daughter Bonita (Belden) Lynds of Barefoot Bay, Fla., and a step-son William Belden of Ellington, Conn. Thelma S. Plumb, 93, of Windsor, died September 16, 2014. She was born in Cavendish, VT. She was one of 12 children born to the late Fredrick and Isadora (Legacy) Stocker. She received her education in the Proctorsville, VT, school system. She married Kenneth Plumb in 1945 in Springfield, VT. He later passed away in 1991. Thelma worked for the Fellows Gear Shaper, Readex in Chester and Vermont Precision in Bartonsville, VT. She also was a member of the Andover Community Church for many years. She is survived by a son, Kenneth Plumb Jr. and his wife Debbie of St. Petersburg , FL; two daughters, Patricia Wilson of Andover, and Beverly Plumb of Chester.

Shirley C. White, 81, of Charlestown, N.H., died September 11, 2014. She was born in Rutland. She attended schools in Fair Haven and Springfield. She returned to school in Windsor, graduating in 1962. She married Paul White in 1951. She was employed as a waitress, worked as a bookkeeper with Howard & Barlow and retired from Sturm Ruger Co. in Newport, N.H., after several years in the assembly department. She is survived by three daughters: Paulette Shambo of Springfield, Dora White of Bridgewater Corners, and Jennie Perkins of Warwick, Mass.; one son Paul White Jr. of Mobile, Ala.; and one brother, Joseph Langton of Springfield.

Roger W. Eastman, 90, of Weathersfield, died September 13, 2014. He was born in Newport, the son of Leighton and Bertha (Webster) Eastman. He attended Springfield schools and graduated from Springfield High School and the Co-op Course Class of 1942. Roger served in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific as a U.S. Navy aviation machinist and aerial gunner. He served on the Anzio CV57 Carrier. He married Ilene Graham and they had five children together. She predeceased him. He was later married to Marian Van Hoesen. He was employed with the Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield and in 1947, he began farming on the family farm in Weathersfield. He was also an agent and sold tires and supplies for the Vermont Farm Bureau Safe Mart for 33 years. He was president of the Windsor County Farm Bureau, vice president of Vermont Farm Bureau, president of Windsor County Field Day and chairman of Windsor County ASCS. He served on the Weathersfield School Board for seven years as treasurer and chairman, served for many years on the Zoning Board of Adjustment for Weathersfield and served many years on the Weathersfield Board of Civil Authority. Survivors include two sons, Gary D. Eastman and Leighton J. Eastman and two daughters, Ilene Curtis and Suzanne Simonds, all of Weathersfield.

Robert Leavitt Dodge, 77, of Perkinsville, died September 7, 2014. He was born to William and Cecile (Leavitt) Dodge. He attended primary school in Springfield and went on to graduate from the Vermont School of Agriculture in 1955. He enlisted in the U.S. Army later in 1955 and served as a mechanic in Germany until 1958. Bob founded Dodge Brothers, a concrete contracting business. Survivors include his children, Chris Dodge, Deborah Dodge and Jenn (Dodge) Spano; brothers, and Mark, John and Joe Dodge. [photo]

Dr. Robert N. Jackson, 99, of Chester, died September 10, 2014. “Doc” was born at 25 Orchard St., in Springfield, the son of Clarence Addison Jackson and Grace Bacheldor Bishop. He studied at Springfield High School and received his advanced education at Syracuse University where he graduated from medical school in 1942. After receiving his medical degree, Doc joined the U.S. Army, where he served as a Major in Egypt during the end of World War II. Doc completed his surgical residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital in White River Junction, Vermont and Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover, New Hampshire. Doc had been a beloved general surgeon at Springfield Hospital for about 40 years. He truly loved the practice of medicine and surgery and considered it a privilege to help his patients at the time when they needed him the most. Doc was fascinated by aviation after meeting his boyhood idol, Charles Lindbergh. This became a lifelong passion and he became an accomplished pilot, logging several thousand flight hours in his adored Cessna 44 Quebec. Doc Jackson was predeceased by his wife, Naoma Jones Jackson; his son. John Hollister Jackson. He is survived by his daughter, Joan Jackson-O’Brien; his sister Hope Lund; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. [photo]

Floyd N. Roberts, Lt. Col. USAF (Ret.), 75, of Springfield, died September 7, 2014. He was born June 13, 1939, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He attended elementary school in Newark, New Jersey until the family moved to Livingston, New Jersey. Floyd graduated from Livingston High School in June 1957. In June 1961, he graduated from the Virginia Military Institute with a B.S. in civil engineering and a commission as an Air Force Reserve Second Lieutenant. His active duty began in September at Webb Air Force Base, Big Spring, Texas. While at Webb, he was offered and accepted a Regular Air Force commission. After four months of B-52 Combat Crew Training at Castle Air Force Base, California, he reported to Westover in January 1966, where he was certified as a B-52 C/D Combat Crewmember. At Westover, Floyd upgraded to an Instructor Radar-Navigator (IRN) and flew a total of 259 B-52 Arc Light bombing missions in Southeast Asia, flying out of Guam, Okinawa and Thailand. In 1984, Floyd was assigned to the 56th Civil Engineering Squadron, MacDill Air Force Base Florida, as the Chief of Operations. He was responsible for all the maintenance, repair, and minor construction activities for an entire air force base that was functionally the size of a small city. MacDill was Floyd’s last active duty assignment and he retired in August 1987, one month short of 26 years of consecutive Air Force active duty. In January 1989, Floyd started working for the town of Newport, New Hampshire and then the town of Jaffrey, New Hampshire as their public works directors. After moving to Vermont in September of 1996, Floyd subsequently became the District Transportation Administrator (DTA) of Maintenance District 2 with the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTRANS), retiring in 2005. Floyd was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Springfield. He also was a Life Member of the VFW and American Legion. He served on the town of Springfield Airport Commission and was the town’s representative to the Southern Windsor County Planning Commission’s Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC). Survivors include his wife, Mary-Jane (Koledo Burlew); daughter, Amy Holbert of Holiday, Florida; stepsons, Stephen and Matthew Burlew of Springfield. [photo]

Mildred W. Ambrose, 83, of Springfield, died September 5, 2014. Mildred was born in Weathersfield and grew up on a farm in Barnard, Vermont. Mildred was educated in Woodstock schools. She married Lawrence “Larry” Ambrose in 1948. They lived in Milwaukee and in Delaware until moving back to Woodstock in 1952. They moved to Perkinsville in the late 1950s and in 1969, moved to Springfield. Mildred was employed for many years at Springfield Hospital as a nurses aide, working the third shift. John M. Losee, 79, of Springfield, died September 4, 2014. He was born in Springfield, the son of Leander and Orilla R. (Hedges) Losee. He attended Springfield schools and graduated from Springfield High School Class of 1953. John was employed with the Springfield Public Works Department for three years, Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield for 14 years, Jones & Lamson Machine Tool Company in Springfield for 10 years, Mack Molding in Cavendish for a short time and Intec Inc., in Bellows Falls for 10 years. He retired in 1997 due to health issues. John also served with the U.S. Army Reserve in Chester, for seven years and was a volunteer firefighter for the Springfield Fire Department for 31 years. Alva P. Estey, 87, of Weathersfield, died September 3, 2014. He was born in Windsor. He attended schools in Windsor, Plainfield and Springfield, graduating from Springfield High School. Mr. Estey served in World War II in the Pacific Theater. He married Eda Frances Bickford in 1947. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary earlier this year. They made their home in Springfield until 1970, when they moved to Weathersfield. Mr. Estey was employed his entire life by Bryant’s in Springfield. He retired in 1990 after 47 years of service as a supervisor on what was known as the “test floor,” in the Quality Control Department. Survivors include his wife, Eda; two sons, Gregory D. of Meriden and Jonathan A. of West Claremont, N.H.; and one sister, Doris Zaleski of Windsor. [photo]

Rachel Lillian (Hoisington) Jensen, 88, of Perkinsville, died August 29, 2014. She was born in Springfield, daughter to Frank Hoisington and Lillian (Avery) Hoisington, and was raised there with siblings David, Francis, Calvin, and Muriel. She graduated from Springfield High School in 1944 and from Castleton State College in 1950.O In 1950, she married John Thøgersen Jensen, originally of Copenhagen, Denmark. She was able to see many parts of the world while traveling with John on business. For two years, they lived in Paris. Rachel taught elementary grades in Springfield and Weathersfield in the 1950s and at the Perkinsville School in the 1970s. In 2006, the Weathersfield School District established the Rachel Jensen Music Award Fund in her honor. Rachel belonged to the Perkinsville Community Church, where she was well-loved for her dedicated service over four decades as the church organist. Rachel and John spent their free time restoring their 1812 farmhouse, where she lived for fifty years. Survivors include her sister Muriel Berg of Dedham, MA; daughter Lillian Giangreco of Basking Ridge, NJ; son Jens Jensen of New Harmony, UT; five grandchildren; and extended family.

Patricia W. Davis, 80, of Springfield, died September 3, 2014. he was born in Burlington. She attended schools in Bristol, and graduated from Bristol High School in 1951, She later graduated from the University of Vermont dental hygiene program in 1953. In 1959, she married James B. Davis in Bristol. She worked as a dental hygienist for many years. After retirement, she worked for several years as a tour guide at the Calvin Coolidge Homestead in Plymouth. Mrs. Davis was a Girl Scout leader and held positions within the state organization of Girl Scouts of America. Mrs. Davis was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield for many years, and volunteered at various events for the church and the Springfield community. She is survived by one son, Michael J. Davis of Burlington; two daughters: Joanna Clarke-Pounder and Barbara Hall, both of Hudson, N.H.; two granddaughters; one brother, George J. Whitcomb of Ormond Beach, Fla.; and her longtime companion, Ed Huber. [photo]

Malcolm Warner Guild, 79, of Cambridgeport, died August 20, 2014. Born in Rutland Malcolm was a boyhood friend and college roommate of Jim Jeffords, who also died this week. Mac attended Yale University on a ROTC scholarship and served as a Navy pilot. On Feb. 16, 1963, he married Mary MacDonald, who predeceased him in 2010. Mac and Mary moved to Cambridgeport in 1965 and raised their family on a small farm on Atcherson Hollow Road. He worked at IBM in the early years of computers, and then worked for most of his career as manager of data processing at Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield. Survivors include his six children: Matthew Guild of Bellows Falls, Jeanne Eastman of North Chatham, N.H., Katherine Kane of Cambridgeport, Linda Milligan of Ashland, Me., Susan Miller of Milhousen, Ind. and Thaddeus Guild ( of Cambridgeport. Harold F. Grout, 98, of Springfield, died August 18, 2014. He was born in Brookfield. He attended schools in East Dorset and served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Peru for several years. In 1939, he married Marion Warner in East Dorset. Mr. Grout worked as a tool maker with Fellows Gear Shaper Co. in Springfield for 30 years, retiring in 1972. He later worked at Bryant Grinder Co. for two years and also for Bob Jones as a tool maker for the manufacturing of the Yellow Bird Cultivator. After his retirement from the machine tool industry, Mr. Grout worked at the Weathersfield Inn for 15 years. Mr. Grout was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Springfield, a member of the Cavendish Grange, the State Grange and the National Grange. He is a Past Master of the Springfield Grange, and a Past Deputy of the State Grange. He was also very active in the Springfield Senior Center and R.S.V.P. for many years.Mr. Grout wrote and recited poetry. His poem about Mount Ascutney is on a plaque placed on the bench at the North Springfield Dam with a view of Mount Ascutney. Mr. Grout was community minded and volunteered many hours cleaning and weeding at local parks. He was honored many times by Springfield and awarded many plaques for his community service. Carolyn Houghton Johnson, 92, of Weathersfield, died August 13, 2014. She was born in Lyndonville. She was a graduate of Lyndon Institute. During the war years, Carolyn was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft as a transportation manager. Later she worked in advertising at the New York Herald Tribune. She also worked at the Winston Salem Journal, radio station WSJS, the Middletown Press and the Eagle Times. She married Richard Grimes of Tulsa, Oklahoma and they had two daughters. During the 1950s, Carolyn spoke professionally throughout New England on Vermont humor and is the author of a book and several short stories. In 1967, she married Elmer (Ted) Johnson and moved to Weathersfield. She was employed in the personnel department of the Vermont Research Corporation in North Springfield for 10 years and then became the town treasurer of Weathersfield, where she served for 17 years. Carolyn was also the treasurer of Vermont Cities and Towns Unemployment Board. Fred Ramsay Mellish, 76, of Perkinsville, died August 11, 2014. He was born in Hartford, Conn. In his youth, Fred attended Bellows Falls Union High School, earning his GED, and then began his career in the military, serving in the U.S. Navy for four years followed by 27 years of service with the National Guard. In 1957, he married Dolores Davis. Fred was a custodian in the Springfield, Vermont, school district. He also worked many years for the Town of Springfield. He and his wife were shepherds of Suffork sheep. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Norma Hicking; two sons, Benjamin and Donald; his sister Beverly Page of Holland, Mass.; and his brother, William of Quaker Hill, Conn. [photo]

Linda L. Westney, 66, of Charlestown, N.H., died August 4, 2014. She was born in Springfield, the daughter of Arthur and Hazel (Ploof) Ploof. She attended Springfield schools and graduated from Springfield High School Class of 1965. In 1971, she married Eldred A. Westney in Ascutney. She was employed for many years in file management for the Boy Scouts of America Distribution Center and the American Aircraft Carrier Support. She worked doing housekeeping and as a cashier at P&C Supermarket. She worked for the Rutland Herald and most recently worked as a certified tax preparer at the Claremont Senior Center. Survivors include her husband, Eldred of Charlestown; one son, Robert L. Westney of Quakertown, Pa.; two daughters, Kathleen A. Sullivan of Belchertown, Mass.. and Cynthia L. Doris Raitanen, 91, of Chester, died July 31, 2014.She was born in Brattleboro and grew up in Windham. She married Bion Eddy in 1941. Mr. Eddy died in 1945. She married Reino Raitanen in 1948. During their life together, in Chester, they had four daughters; Sylvia, Kathryn, Carol and Patricia. Mr. Raitanen died in 1972. At that time, Mrs. Raitanen attended the Thompson School of Nursing. In 1976, she began her nursing career as an LPN at Springfield Hospital and worked there until her retirement in 1988. After retirement she worked for Visiting Nurses as a caregiver until 1993. She is survived by her siblings: Mildred Horn, Joyce Mattson, Lois Severance, Beverly Parker, Norman Stowell and Virginia Stowell; her children: Ruth Howe, David Eddy, Sylvia Flint, Kathryn Orton, Carol Raitanen and Patricia Raitanen.

Judith L. Stebbins, 70, of Springfield, died July 30, 2014. She was born and raised in Brattleboro and graduated from Brattleboro High School. She married Edmond J. Stebbins in 1967. Judith made her home in Rutland, Vt., for 35 years, and worked as a loan officer for the Chittenden Bank in Rutland for 33 years, retiring in 2007. She had made her home in North Springfield since 2009. Survivors include her son Scott A. Stebbins and his wife, Christy, of Perkinsville.

Chad E. Jackson, 35, of Springfield, died July 29, 2014. He was born in Springfield, son of Paul E. and Deborah J. (Aiken) Jackson. Chad graduated from Springfield High School Class of 1998. He was a star athlete who played football, basketball, baseball and was on the wrestling team and swim team in junior high school. In June 1998, he was given the Charlie Tarro Memorial Award. Chad worked in construction most of his life. He is survived by his father, Paul Jackson and one brother, Christopher Jackson, both of Springfield; his maternal grandfather, Delbert “Gabby” Aiken, also of Springfield; maternal aunts and uncles include Larry and Cindy Aiken, Scott and Shauna Lynch, and Dan and Tammy Griswold, all of Springfield; paternal aunts and uncles include Edward and Joyce Jackson of Florida, Harold and Terrie Jackson, Lillian and Jeff Rowe, Priscilla and Tim Munukka, Rosemary Jackson, Jayne and Lester Darrell and Donna and Chris Tuffts, all of Springfield, and Diane and Pete Sheldon of Chester. Glendon W. Richmond, 83, of Claremont, N.H., died July 29, 2014. Glendon was born and raised in Claremont and graduated in the Stevens High School Class of 1949. Glen began studies at UNH in 1949, but left school for military service just one semester short of graduation. He enrolled in the U.S. Navy in 1953 for a six-year tour of duty at the close of the Korean War. He was educated in the Chinese language at what is now the Defense Language Institute at the Presidio in Monterey, Calif. His linguistic acuity paired with an equal facility with the language of mathematics led to his naval assignment breaking Chinese military codes, through the interception of signals from various listening posts including submarine surveillance, on Okinawa and Taiwan. His success in cryptology had already opened up other opportunities, though, and Glen accepted a position with the CIA in Washington, D.C., in May 1959. In October of that year, he married Dorothy Colvin, whom he had met before leaving New Hampshire. Glen completed his secondary studies at UNH with support from his government position. He graduated in January 1962 with a BS degree in engineering. Glen pursued an engineering career in the industrial lower valley, working first at J&L in Springfield, then at Joy Manufacturing in Claremont for 25 years until their operation was shuttered. His later career then returned to Springfield, working at Bryant’s, Gear Shaper, and finally coming full circle to J&L once again. Raymond E. Gosselin, 85, of Essex Junction, died May 5, 2014. Raymond was born in Springfield, the son of the late Onesime and Yvonne (Rabideau) Gosselin. Raymond graduated from Springfield High School in 1947 and in 1957 moved to Essex Junction, Vt., to begin a career at IBM, where he worked until he retired in 1985. Margaret S. Bascom, 88, of Westmoreland, N.H., died July 19, 2014. She was born Margaret Edith Haddad in Newport, N.H. She attended schools in Newport and Charlestown. In her early life, she had been employed at Nourse’s Pharmacy in Charlestown and in the drafting department of Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield. She married Robert Spaulding in 1947, in Charlestown. He died in 1993. She was an area realtor for many years and was named Realtor of the Year by the Sunapee Region Board of Realtors in 1974. She served as a corporator of Claremont Savings Bank from 1977 to 2011. Margaret married Harvey Bascom of Acworth in 2001. Survivors include her husband and his children; her sister, Virginia “Dinnie” (Haddad) McClure of Laguna Hills, Calif.; and her brother, Carlton F. Haddad of Hamden, Conn. [photo]

Randy A. Wakefield, 52, of Springfield, died July 24, 2014. He was born in Ticonderoga, N.Y., the son of Walter and Vivian (Sanderson) Wakefield. He attended schools in Reading and Springfield. In 1984, Mr. Wakefield married Joni V. Gabert in Ludlow. He was employed with Bomar/Pompanette Inc. in Charlestown, N.H., for many years. Survivors include his wife of Springfield; his mother of Ascutney; five brothers, Walter, Terry, Kim, Kent and Kip Wakefield; three sisters, Sue Longfellow, Sandra DePecol and Janna Childs.

Arlene Dzewaltowski, 79, of Springfield, died July 18, 2014. She was born May 24, 1935, in Springfield, the daughter of Wallace V. and Mary M. (Klementowicz) Lovell. She attended Springfield schools and graduated from Springfield High School, class of 1953. In 1955, she married John J. Dzewaltowski in Springfield. He predeceased her in 2003. She was employed as an administrative assistant at Jones & Lamson Machine Tool Co. in Springfield, Johnson & Dix Fuel Co. in Springfield and the Connecticut Valley Health Compact, also in Springfield. Survivors include three daughters, Margaret deLacoste of Springfield, Theresa Ambrose of Springfield and Ann Pushee of Haverhill, N.H.; one son, Peter Dzewaltowski of Glendale, Calif.; one sister, Gloria Landman of Glendale, Calif.

Mary C. Dumas, 96, of Springfield, died July 21, 2014. She was born May 10, 1918, in Springfield, the daughter of William and Mary (Bromley) Brassington. She attended Springfield schools and was a lifelong resident of Springfield. In 1952, she married Joseph G. Dumas in Springfield, He predeceased her in 1995. Mary worked at the Springfield Hospital for many years, Furmans Dept. Store and Wilson Jewelry doing housekeeping. She also worked as a housekeeper for many families in the Springfield area for many years. She enjoyed music and played the accordion and the organ. Survivors include a son, James G. Dumas of Kenova, West Virginia; two daughters, Mary M. Lescord of Bellows Falls, and Denise M. Swartz of Springfield

Annie Lorinovich Hebert, 92, of Springfield, died July 14, 2014. She was born Nov. 28, 1921, in Springfield, the daughter of John and Mary (Augustinovich) Lorinovich. She attended Springfield schools. In 1951, she married William “Bill” Hebert. She was employed at Jones & Lamson Machine Tool Company in Springfield for 23 years. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield and helped out with community lunches, church fish frys and hot lunches for the Holy Family Catholic School. She was a member of RSVP. She is survived by one son, Richard W. Hebert and his wife, Judyth, of Springfield; two granddaughters Ashley Hebert and Amanda Hartwig. [photo]

Pamela Sue Taft-Dick, 63, of Springfield, died July 13, 2014. She was born and raised in Springfield, where she graduated from Springfield High School in 1969. She attended Middlebury College, where she graduated in 1973 with a BA in German. She lived and taught in Germany from 1974 to 1976, perfecting her German language skills. In 1977, she married Jeff Dick in Springfield and for the next 32 years accompanied him in his career with the United Nations World Food Program, living in five countries in Africa, three countries in Asia, as well as in Rome, Italy (WFP headquarters). She obtained an MA in German from Middlebury College in 1981. Survivors include her parents, Hugh and Barbara Taft, of Hanover, N.H.; her husband of 36 years, Jeffrey Taft-Dick of Springfield; three children, Jonathan Taft-Dick and Joya Taft-Dick, both of Washington, D.C., and Philip Taft-Dick of San Diego, Calif.; two siblings, Rod Taft of Medfield, Mass., and Martha Taft of Washington, D.C. Robert J. Barlow, 87, of Springfield, died July 13, 2014. He was born in Springfield, the only child of Leslie Reuben and Katherine (Coucher) Barlow. Robert achieved his Eagle Scout status and graduated from Springfield High School in the Class of 1945. With his parents’ help, he purchased Lookaway Farm in the Eureka District in 1942. He married Mabel Louise Trombley in 1949 and they farmed together for a lifetime. The farm started with a poultry business, selling eggs, then became a working dairy farm, selling milk to the Bellows Falls Creamery, and most recently raising beef cattle. Robert won the Outstanding Young Farmer Award for the State of Vermont in 1959, outstanding accomplishment in soil conservation from the Ottauquechee Soil Conservation District, and recognition from the North American Maple Council. He was an active member of the Vermont Sugarmakers Association, including past president and at one time was the third largest maple producer in Vermont. He was active on several farm committees and with the Windsor County Agricultural Fair, including hosting the event. Robert also drove a school bus for more than 30 years. Robert is survived by his spouse, Mabel, recently celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. He is survived by three children, Jane Waysville and her husband, John, Scott Barlow and his wife, Joanne, all of Springfield and Twyla Sweet Moon of Marathon, Fla. [photo]

Amy J. Parent, 43, of Topsham, died July 11, 2014. She was born in Springfield, the daughter of Robert Baker and Theresa “Terry” (Carpenter) Carty. She attended school in Springfield and graduated in 1989 from Springfield High School. In 1996, she married David R. Parent of Springfield. They lived in Florida for 13 years before moving back to Vermont in 2003, where they made their home in Topsham. Amy worked at the Cobble Mountain Hammock Shop in East Corinth and most recently, she was a private home healthcare provider. Survivors include her husband, David Parent, a son, Travis Parent and a daughter, Jessie Parent, all of Topsham, Vt.; her father, Robert Baker and his wife, Cheryl of Springfield; her mother, Terry Carty and her husband, Fred, of Tunbridge, Vt.; and her grandmother, Vera Carpenter of Windsor. Robert H. Crandall, 56, of New Port Richey, Fla., died July 10, 2014. Robert (Bob) was born in Sanford, Fla., received his education in Weathersfield, graduating from Springfield High School Class of 1975. He went on to serve his apprenticeship as a web-offset pressman at the Springfield Times Reporter (later to become the Eagle Times) and the Burlington Free Press. After working as a journeyman pressman with his father at the Twin State Press in Lebanon, he moved to Florida and began a career in the newspaper printing business, rising to shift manager with Gannett News and Times News. Survivors include his parents, Galen and Dottie (Heath) Crandall of Perkinsville; brother Butch of Perkinsville, brother Brad and wife Melanie of Indianapolis, Ind., sister Betsy Crandall of Chester, sister Peg Crandall Van Norden of Wentworth, N.H., and sister Gayle Turke of Ithaca, N.Y. He is also survived by his beloved longtime companion, Margaret (Marge) Thomas.

Dennis E. Capron, 65, of Springfield, died June 15, 2014 at his winter home in Nashville, Tenn. Dennis was born in Springfield, the son of Ronald C. and Natalie (Rodger) Capron. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1966 and Wentworth Institute in Boston, Mass., in 1968. Beverly Joan (Betzner) Farkas, 80, of Springfield, also known as Bunny, died July 4, 2014. She was born in New Haven, Conn. She worked for SNET in New Haven for 28 years and retired in 1989. She lived most of her life in the New Haven areas and in Oxford, Conn., where she was predeceased by her husband, Richard M. Farkas. After his passing, she followed her daughter and family to Vermont where she had resided for the past 20 years. She was a dedicated volunteer with the RSVP and Springfield Hospital. Survivors include her daughter Lesley Ann (Miner) Pappas; one sister, Nancy (Betzner) Sisson; and one brother, Donald J Betzner. [photo]

Marian S. Douglas, 85, of Springfield, died July 4, 2014. She was born in Blooming Glen, Pa. She attended schools in the Blooming Glen area and was an alumnus of Grand View Hospital. She moved to Vermont in 1953. In 1963, she married Robert H. Douglas. Mrs. Douglas was employed as a nurse with Springfield Hospital for more than 25 years. She also worked in home health care in the Springfield area for many years. Survivors include her husband, Robert Douglas of Springfield; one son, Geoffrey Douglas of Springfield; one daughter, Deborah Kopefchny of Toronto, Canada; one brother, Dr. Samuel Stover of Alabama; two sisters Evelyn Peck and Karen Fryberger, both of Arizona.

Richard J. “Rick” Campbell, 55, of Springfield, died July 3, 2014. He was born June 14, 1959, in Springfield, the son of Thomas and Lynne (Petraglia) Leonard. He attended Springfield schools and graduated from Springfield High School Class of 1977. Rick was employed for many years as a stone mason, working for Brown Construction, Irving Eaton Masonry, Bingham Masonry and most recently for Greg Adamovich.

Beverly M. Abbott, 89, of Springfield, died June 21, 2014. She was born in Thetford, the daughter of Aden and Mildred (Kent) Rice. She attended Springfield schools and graduated from Springfield High School, Class of 1942. She married Roland E. Abbott in Springfield in 1942. Beverly worked as a teacher’s aide in the Springfield school system for several years. She also worked at Britt’s Department Store in Springfield for several years. She was a very active member of the Springfield Senior Center, and a very active volunteer in the Springfield community for many years, volunteering with the senior center and at the Springfield Family Center. Survivors include one son, Michael Abbott of Sellersburg, Ind.; two daughters, Barbara Rawson of Londonderry, Vt., and Bonnie Gambero of Milton, Vt.

Jeanne C. Vatne, 83, of Springfield, died June 12, 2014. Born in Florence, Mass., Jeanne grew up in Greenfield, Mass. and graduated from St. Michael’s High School in Northampton, Mass., in 1948. She then went on to study art and graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, Mass., in 1952. Boston is where she met her future husband, Magnor Vatne, of Vatne, Norway.They married in 1952 and lived together for 49 years in Chester then Springfield until her husband’s death in February of 2002. Jeanne always liked to use her artistic talents and enjoyed working with stained glass. For a time, she was an assistant teacher at Riverside Junior High School in Springfield and taught catechism at St. Mary’s Church in Springfield. Jeanne is survived by her children, Peter of Nashua, N.H., Karen of Colorado, Diane of Old Town, Maine, Thomas of Acton, Mass., and Kristine of Springfield. [photo]

May S. Wheeler,91, of North Egremont, Mass., died June 6, 2014. Born in Springfield, Vermont, she was the daughter of the late Milton and Julia Burton Slater. She was a 1941 graduate of Springfield, Vt. schools. May received a child care certificate for her training at St. Margaret’s Home for Babies and Children in Albany, NY. She worked many years for families in the Albany area. Survivors include her husband, Roland B. Wheeler, whom she married in 1950; three loving children, Kevin Wheeler, Airlie Ohman, both of North Egremont, Mass., and Dona Kellogg of Barefoot Bay, Fla.

Edward G. Chesbro, 74, of Wilder, died June 5, 2014. He was born in Castleton, where he grew up. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged after his tour of duty. He had a varied career over forty years in the trucking industry. He and wife, Terry, were also business owners of the Lucky Clover Laundromat in Springfield. Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Terry Ann, and sisters Mary Dayton of Rutland, VT, and Winifred Mason (Donald) of Fair Haven.

Alma Edith Perry, 89, of Chester, died May 31, 2014. Alma was born in Lake George, N.Y. and attended schools there. In 1946, she married Leland H. Perry in Danby Four Corners, Vermont. They moved to Springfield in 1946 and to Chester in 1950 to raise their family. Alma was active in the Special Olympics with her daughter Judith. She also worked as a bus driver in Cavendish, Vermont, and did local house cleaning. Alma was an active member of Advent Christian Church in North Springfield. Survivors include her two sons, Neal Perry of Cavendish and Bruce Perry of Ludlow; two daughters, Joyce Perry-Norton of Orange Park, Florida, and Phyllis Parmenter of Hickory, North Carolina. Roger J. Bolster, 81, of Springfield, died June 3, 2014. He was born in East Dorset. He attended Manchester schools and graduated from Burr and Burton Academy. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict, serving on the USS Argentina, stationed in Newfoundland. In 1957, he married Arlene Jane Hess in Arlington. He was employed for many years as sales engineer by Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield. After his retirement he worked with the Army Corps of Engineers for a few years. Survivors include two daughters, Angela Leary of Manchester, N.H., and Sarah Rushton of North Springfield; a sister, Edith Sargood of Arlington; and longtime companion Brenda Richardson of North Springfield.

Robert Tyrrell Dick, 97, of Foxboro. Mass., died May 31, 2014. Born in Stockton IL, Mr. Dick graduated from Stockton High School in 1935. After thirteen months in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Idaho and Oregon, he attended the University of Dubuque, Iowa, from 1936-38. Mr. Dick received an AB degree from Tufts University in 1942. Although he was a student at Crane School of Religion on the Tufts campus, he waived his theological exemption and served in Civilian Public Service units for four years during WWII, in New Hampshire, Vermont and New York, doing forestry work, ward duty in mental hospitals, and as a subject in experiments in nutrition, high altitude, heat and dehydration at the University of Rochester Medical School, Rochester, N.Y. In later years, he edited a booklet, “Guinea Pigs for Peace: The Story of C.P.S. 115-R (1943–1946),” about those experiments. In 1948, Mr. Dick received his BD degree from Colgate-Rochester Divinity School, Rochester NY, and was ordained to the Christian ministry in the Universalist Church of Bristol, NY. Mr. Dick served Unitarian Universalist parishes for thirty-six years including Springfield, Vermont before moving on to Elkhart, Indiana where he later retired in 1984. In 1986, Mr. and Mrs. Dick moved back to Springfield, VT, where they joined the local Unitarian Universalist Church. Mr. Dick was a volunteer for Hospice, RSVP, and a member of the Senior Center Advisory Board, as well as being active in the formation of a Vermont Chapter of the United Nations Association of the USA, serving on its board. He was a charter member of Common Cause, a member for over fifty years of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, an international religious pacifist organization, and a life member of the NAACP. Mr. Dick was predeceased by his spouse in 2008 after 65 years of marriage, Helen Hersey Dick, whom he married in Danbury, CT, in 1943. Survivors include two sons, Nathan, of Estes Park, CO; Jeffrey Taft-Dick, of Springfield, VT; and a daughter, Noreen Redd, of San Diego, CA.

John P. Augustinovich, 90, of Springfield, died June 2, 2014. He was born in Springfield, the son of Nicholas and Anna (Laskevich) Augustinovich. He attended Springfield schools and graduated from Springfield High School. In 1947, he married Elizabeth “Betty” Kamel in Springfield. He was employed as a machinist with the Bryant Grinder Company in Springfield for 46 years, and with his wife, owned and operated a dairy farm on Elm Hill in Springfield for more than 67 years. Mae J. Ely, 77, of North Springfield, died May 30, 2014. She was born in Wells and attended schools in Wells and Granville, N.Y. She worked as a home health aide in the Wells and Dorset areas for many years. She was a seamstress and had a sewing business in her home in Rutland for many years while raising her five children. In 1985, she married Lavern J. Ely in Granville. She made her home in the Wells area most of her life, moving to North Springfield in 2010. Darlene Fitzherbert, 52, of Springfield, died May 20, 2014. Darlene was born in Meriden, Conn., the only daughter of the late Arline Viola (Leskiw) and Donald P. Fitzherbert Sr., formerly of Springfield. Darlene graduated from Springfield High School, Class of 1980. She continued her education at New England School of Hair Design and began her career as a devoted hair dresser/cosmologist to hundreds of customers. Darlene owned and operated Hair Studio D in White River Junction for more than 18 years before working at The Hair Shed in Lebanon. Darlene has four brothers, Philip B. of Loomis, Calif., Dewaine R. of Springfield, Donald P. Jr. of Perkinsville and Aaron J. of Weathersfield. [photo]

Eugene N. Duffy, 97, of Springfield, died May 22, 2014. He was born in Saxonville, Mass. His childhood was spent in Lebanon. He graduated from Lebanon High School Class of 1935. He was very active in sports during school. He attended the Clark School in Hanover, N.H., graduating in 1936. He then attended University of New Hampshire and was a member of Class of 1941, graduating with a BS in accounting. He was also a member of the University of New Hampshire Ski team and a ski jumper while attending. In 1965, he married Laura M. Losee in Springfield. He served as treasurer for the Springfield Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by one son, Kenneth Norman Duffy and his wife, Amy, of Weathersfield.

Mary Catherine Sadler, 90, of Springfield, died January 8, 2014. She was born in Bellows Falls. She married Francis A. Sadler of Springfield, Mass. in 1940. She was a very active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield. She was a Grey Lady with the Red Cross and president of the plaza bowling league. Primarily a homemaker, she was blessed with special creative talents in sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening, woodworking, ceramics and baking. Robert H. Burbank Jr., 75, of Springfield, died April 19, 2014. Born in Springfield, he graduated from Springfield High in 1957. He worked for Fellows Gear Shaper for several years. He enjoyed being a coach for several baseball and softball teams in Springfield. Survivors include his wife, Rosemarie (Frank) Burbank; his children, Lisa Burbank of Springfield, LeRoy Burbank of Canaan, N.H., and Sandra Burbank of South Londonderry; and two stepchildren, Cassandra Dodge of Marysville, Tenn., and Ralph Schofield of Claremont; his mother, Bernice Jenks, and two sisters, Barbara Balla and Patricia Wilson, all of Ocala, Fla.

Mary D. Lane, 95, of Springfield, died May 10, 2014. She was born in Middlebury and attended local schools there. In 1938, she married Clarence E. Lane. Mrs. Lane worked in doctors’ offices and retired from Springfield Hospital where she was an LPN, first floor ward clerk and finally, front desk telephone operator. After retirement, she did volunteer work for a few years. She was also employed in the Chester-Andover school kitchen. Donald P. Fitzherbert Sr., 83, of Springfield, died May 4, 2014. He was born in Standish, Maine. At the age of 17, he entered the military during the Korean Conflict and spent the next six years in the U.S. Army, serving a tour in Korea, earning the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal, before his honorable discharge in late 1954. He married a longtime pen pal, Arline Leskiw in 1955. They were married for 56 years until her passing in 2011. He was worked 40-plus years as a heavy equipment operator in the construction trade. He was employed at companies such as North Haven Construction of Connecticut, McKenzie Construction of Chester, Vt., and retired from Daniels Construction of Weathersfield. Survivors include a daughter, Darlene of Weathersfield; four sons, Phillip B. of Loomis, Calif., Dewaine R. of Springfield, Donald P. Jr. of Perkinsville and Aaron J. of Weathersfield; One brother, Fay (Babe) Fitzherbert of Mars Hill, Maine; and a sister, Carolyn Maki. [photo]

Waldron A. Brown, 95, of Springfield, died May 7, 2014. . He was born in Barrington, N.H. and attended schools there. In 1942, he married Barbara M. Miller in Springfield. He served in the United States Army during World War II. As a young man, he worked with his father in the family saw mill in Barrington, N.H. He was later employed as a machinist with the Fellows Gear Shaper for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Robert L. Johnson VFW Post 771 in Springfield and a member of the American Legion Post 67 in Chester for many years. He is survived by two sons, Thomas Brown of Sharon, Vt., John Brown of Springfield; two daughters, Judy Topolski of Ascutney and Susan Beebe of Chester.

Lyman Prouty, 86, of Springfield, died May 1, 2014. He was born in Grafton and attended schools there. He served in the United States Army during World War II, serving in the occupation of Japan. Mr. Prouty was employed with the town of Grafton, the St. Johnsbury Trucking Company and as a machinist in the drill and cutter shops with the Fellows Gear Shaper Company for 34 years. He was married to Marilyn Come for 30 years and they divorced. In1984, he married Rosabel A. LaFrance. Survivors include his wife, Rosabel of Springfield; one son, Mark Prouty of Weathersfield; one stepson, Rick Johnson of Springfield; one stepdaughter, Debra Richardson of Springfield. [photo]

Edna (Noyes) Martyn, 101, of Springfield, died April 26, 2014. She was born in Wallingford and graduated from Rutland High School in 1932. In 1934, she married Stephen P. Martyn Sr. in Ludlow. Mrs. Martyn was a member of First Congregational Church of Springfield, where she served on the Council of Social Agencies and as a choir member, Crown Point Country Club in Springfield and the Shrewsbury Vermont Outing Club. Survivors include a son, Stephen P. Martyn Jr. of Venice, Fla.; and two sisters, Idella Frullo of Marlborough, Mass., and Catherine Sumption of Palmetto, Ga.

Harland E. Whitcomb, 95, of North Springfield, died April 23, 2014. He was born in Springfield, the son of Sumner and Emily (Barber) Whitcomb. He attended Springfield schools, graduating from Springfield High School Class of 1937. Mr. Whitcomb served in the United States Army during World War II, serving in the occupation of Japan. He married Gladys Knight in 1940. She predeceased him in 1990. In 1993, he married Priscilla Gurney Brown. Mr. Whitcomb was an electrical engineer with the Bryant Grinder Company in Springfield for 40 years, retiring in 1981. Mr. Whitcomb was a longtime member of the North Springfield Baptist Church. He enjoyed building and refurbishing pipe organs. In 1959, he disassembled an 1858 Johnson Pipe Organ in Massachusetts, transported and reassembled it with upgraded electric compressor at the North Springfield Baptist Church. He was a member of the Yesteryears Car Club and enjoyed building and restoring antique cars, building his own 1910 Stanley Steamer that he displayed at many car shows in the area. He enjoyed photography and maintained his own dark room for many years, taking and developing hundreds of black and white photos. He held a large collection of glass slides documenting the history of Springfield. Frances H. Baldvins, 78, of Springfield, died April 22, 2014. She was born and raised in Bellows Falls. She graduated from Bellows Falls High School. She married Lewis W. Baldvins in 1956. She was a mother and homemaker and worked for many years as the secretary for Hemenway Electric in Springfield. Survivors include her husband, Lewis W. Baldvins of Springfield; two sons, Thomas Baldvins of Amherst, N.H., and Allan Baldvins of Merrimack, N.H.; two daughters, Catherine Lantiegne of Weare, N.H., and Cynthia Baldvins of Merrimack, N.H.

Miller L. Bibens, 92, of Springfield, died April 20, 2014. He was born Oct. 3, 1921, in Springfield, the son of Kilburn and Nellie (Lawton) Bibens. He attended Springfield schools and graduated from Springfield High School Class of 1939, playing football his senior year. In 1944, he married Barbara Trefry. They were married 34 years before her passing in 1978. In 1985, he married Catherine Delavorious to whom he was married for 16 years until her death in 2001. After his graduation from high school, Miller worked on his father’s dairy farm. He later worked as a herdsman for the Idlenot Dairy in Springfield, ran a grain business and drove a log truck until he took over his father’s farm in 1961. He raised pigs and did custom slaughtering. In 1968 he opened Bibens Slaughtering and Processing, which he ran until his retirement in 1986. He was well-known for raising pigs and pig roasts and was often called on to roast pigs for others. He was a lifetime member of the North Springfield Baptist Church, where he served on several boards and taught Sunday School. He enjoyed participating in the Springfield High School Alumni Variety Shows, telling jokes and was always a crowd favorite. Beverly Ann Marcotte, 80, of Perkinsville, died April 8, 2014. She was born in Springfield, the daughter of Roland and Doris (Fadden) Gosselin. She spent many years working at Fellows Gear Shaper in accounting and then in sales. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Robert V. Marcotte; son Robert W. Lillian L. Makela, 96, of Springfield, died March 20, 2014. She was born in Springfield, the daughter of John C. and Florence (Wheeler) Bargfrede. She grew up and was educated in Chester, graduating from Chester High School in 1936. On May 2, 1940, she married Edward Makela of Springfield. He predeceased her on Jan. 28, 1997. She was primarily a homemaker, and was employed in earlier years by The National Survey and by Britt’s Department Store. Survivors include a son, Karl Makela of Claremont, N.H.; a daughter, Janet Makela of Springfield; five grandsons, two great-grandsons; a sister, Edith Mitchell of Dover, N.H.

Robert Arthur “Bob” Ingalls, 91, of Springfield, died March 30, 2014. He was born in Haverhill, Mass. He graduated from Haverhill High School, class of 1940, and from Wentworth Institute, class of 1942. He was employed with Fellows Gear Shaper Co. from 1942 to 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946. After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Fellows Gear Shaper Co., where he was employed in the engineering department from 1946 to 1956. He was then chief engineer and vice president of Great Eastern Mfg. Co., and chief engineer and later an engineering consultant for Joy Manufacturing Co. Then he was one of the founders of Excet Corp. in Springfield, and president of the company until 1995. He held eight U.S. patents in the fields of gearing and rotary compressor technology. He enjoyed jazz music. In recent years, he played the electric guitar and sang with the Bob Brown Band and at senior centers, nursing homes and adult daycare facilities. William R. Hinds, 87, of Springfield, died March 24, 2014. He was born in Chicago, Ill. He attended elementary school in Springfield, and graduated from Springfield High School. He was a draftsman with the Bryant Grinder Corp. in Springfield, in 1943 and 1944. He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard from 1944 to 1946, and the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1967. He served during World War II, and retired as a master sergeant. He was the manager of hydraulic shops in Hawaii, Guam and England, and chief instructor of the hydraulic department in Portsmouth, N.H., and Tampa, Fla. After his retirement from the Air Force, he was again employed with Bryant Grinder Corp., and later with Thomas Turner Mfg. Co. in Bellows Falls. Survivors include his wife, Patricia, of Crown Point, N.Y.; three sons, Mark R. Hinds, Kim R. Hinds and Curt D. Hinds, all of Crown Point; two daughters, Deborah S. Beaudry and Tammy L. Poland, both of Charlestown, N.H.

Robert F. Metcalf, 93, of Baltimore, died March 25, 2014. He was born in Waterbury, Conn. He attended schools in Putney, Westminster, Williamstown and Baltimore, Vt. In 1943, he married Catherine Cook in Putney, Vt. Mr. Metcalf was employed at Wiggins Building and Concrete Products in North Springfield, as a mechanic for the Idlenot Dairy in North Springfield for 17 years, and then as a mechanic for the Stocker & Austin car dealership in Springfield. He was later employed with the Fellows Gear Shaper Company in North Springfield, retiring in 1983. Over the years, he also worked at farming and logging. He served the Baltimore community as a selectman, auditor and lister over the years. Robert R. McIntyre, 56, of Newport, N.H., died March 18, 2014. Robert was born in Northampton, Mass. He was raised in Ludlow, graduating from Black River High School with the Class of 1976. Bob had been manager at Aubuchon Hardware stores in Springfield and Ludlow, Vt., stores. Clarence N. “Sonny” Grover, 79, of Weathersfield, died March 22, 2014. He was born in North Springfield, the son of Mary (Snell) and Clarence N. Grover Sr. He attended school in Springfield before serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. Mr. Grover married Dorothy Lindgren in 1952, in Springfield. He was employed for 31 years in the heat treatment division at Jones and Lamson, for several years at Mack Molding Co. in Cavendish, and finally, for Springfield School District. He served Weathersfield as chief of the volunteer fire department and as fire warden. Karen A. Bushway, 56, of Perkinsville, died March 19, 2014. She was born in Morristown, N.J. She attended elementary schools in New Jersey and graduated from Green Mountain Union High School Class of 1976. Karen was employed as a para-educator in the primary grades at the Flood Brook School in Londonderry, Vt., for 37 years. In 1995, she married Mark G. Bushway in Springfield. William P. "Peter" Weiss, M.D., 84, of Chester, died January 14, 2014. He was a resident of Chester, Vermont, for over 40 years. Weiss was born in New York City. He graduated from Harvard College in 1952, and completed medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Weiss earned a degree in public health at Johns Hopkins University. He participated in the civil rights movement of the 1960s and promoted women's rights through his association with Planned Parenthood. He worked as a scientist at the National Institutes of Health and in public health before going into private practice. Weiss was a primary care physician in Springfield, Vermont, from 1974 until his retirement in 2010. Leon P. Tessier, 82, of Springfield, died March 17, 2014. He was born in St. Albans. He graduated from Brigham Academy in Bakersfield, Vt. in 1951, and attended the University of Vermont for one year and left school to serve in the United States Army During the Korean War from 1952 to 1955, after his discharge he returned to the University of Vermont and graduated with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. He married Eleanor Wilson in Craftsbury in 1963. Mr. Tessier was employed as a Civil Engineer with the State of Vermont Agency of Transportation for over 37 years retiring in 1996. Mr. and Mrs. Tessier made their home in Bradford, Vt. for many years, and for the past seven years have resided in Springfield. Eleanor of Springfield; two sons, Michael P. Alice Jane Kraft, 83, of Springfield, died March 9, 2014. She was born in Orange, NJ. She graduated from Bloomfield High School and later from Douglas College in New Brunswick, N.J., with a bachelor’s degree in nutritional science. She married Henry Kraft in 1952 in Bloomfield, N.J. Mrs. Kraft was a mother and homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening and hiking, backpacking and hiking on the Long Trail and the Appalachian Trail. She also taught Bible study. Survivors include her husband of Springfield; two sons, James and Stephen Kraft of Springfield; two daughters, Ruth Wadleigh of Charlestown, N.H., and Jae Wiss of Newport, R.I.

Russell A. Wood, 78, of Leicester, died February 16, 2014. He was born in Burlington. In the late ’60s, Russ was owner and proprietor of Woodie’s Esso Service Station on Clinton Street in Springfield. Later in his working career, he became a mechanical engineer, travelling extensively for Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield. Frances Mae Sherwin, 100, of Chester, died February 20, 2014. Born in Springfield, she was raised along with her 10 brothers and sisters in Chester which was her lifelong residence. Pat graduated from Chester High class of 1932. She married Perry Eugene Sherwin in 1938. She was predeceased by her husband in April 1978 and her daughter Beverly in July 2009. Survivors include two sisters, Lillian Makela of Springfield, and Edith Mitchell of Rochester, N.H.

Eleanor E. Clark, 99, formerly of Springfield, died February 21, 2014. She was born and raised in Windsor, Conn. where she married Clifford E. Clark in 1942. Mrs. Clark was active in the Pleasant Valley Grange and Springfield Senior Center. Survivors include three children, Philip Clark of Ellington, Conn., Janice Clark of Branson, Mo., and Carolyn Clark of Windsor, Conn.

Patricia Ann “Trisha” Lamson, 39, of Chester, died February 18, 2014. She was born in Rutland. Tricia was a graduate of Black River High School, Class of 1992. She married her husband, Scott in 2002. She was employed at Dunkin’ Donuts in Springfield. She had also been employed at Sisters in Proctorsville, Vt., Shaw’s Supermarket and Friendly’s Restaurant in Springfield. “Tricia” was predeceased by her parents, Betty Wood and Ray Martel of Ludlow. She is survived by her husband, Scott of St. Albans; three brothers, Danny Maynard of Proctorsville, James Wood of Springfield and Raymond Wood of Proctorsville; two sisters, Bonnie Tucker of Ludlow and Dorothy Maynard of Fair Haven.

Myrtle M. Clark, 88, of Springfield, died February 20, 2014. She was born and raised in Newport, N.H. , and graduated from Towle High School in Newport, class of 1943. In March 1946, she married Raymond Clark. During World War II, she worked as a machinist at Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield. Following the war and for many years, she worked as a housekeeper in private homes in Springfield. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, and past local and district president. Through the years, she served as a Cub Scout leader, and was also a leader for Brownies and Girl Scouts. Survivors include three sons: Stanley Clark, Raymond Clark and Norman Clark, all of Springfield; and a daughter, Roberta Blodgett of Shoreham.

Betty White Sykes, 85, of Springfield, died February 14, 2014. She was born in Woodsville, N.H. She grew up in Ryegate and graduated from Woodsville High School and from the University of Vermont. She married Gordon Sykes in 1953, living first in Windsor and then Springfield. She was also a grade school teacher in Windsor and in Springfield. She is survived by son Dexter of Barre, her daughter Deborah of Springfield. [photo]

Patricia L. Barton, 56, of Reading, died February 8, 2014. She was born in Hanover, N.H. and graduated from Woodstock Union High School in 1975. She worked at Springfield Savings and Loan for 17 years as a secretary/treasurer, the Parks & Wilson Co. in Springfield, the Rockingham Country Club, and most recently as a manager for the Woodstock Cookie Co. She also catered weddings and other special occasions. Survivors include her husband of 20 years, Edwin “Jigger” Barton of Reading; four children: Dan Schaefer of Pomfret, Lisa Gibbons and Tylar Barton, both of Springfield, and Travis Barton of Perkinsville.

John E. Taylor, 83, of Springfield, died February 6, 2014. He was the son of Bernard H. and Charlotte (Waterman) Taylor. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1948, attended Vermont Academy and the University of Vermont, and graduated from St. Mary’s College in Leavenworth, Kan., with a Bachelor of Science degree. He served in in the U.S. in Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Germany and the United States during a 20-year career, retiring as Lieutenant Colonel in 1972. Survivors include his wife, Gwynna (Miller) Taylor; two children, John Taylor Jr. of Longmeadow, Mass., and Cynthia Hornemann of Peachtree City, Ga. [photo]

H. Dorothy Parks, 88, of Springfield, died February 6, 2014. She was born in Boston, Mass. She graduated from Chester High School in 1943. In 1946, she married Junior R. Parks in Springfield. He died in 1982. Mrs. Parks was a member of the Springfield Moose and also belonged to Robert L. Johnson VFW Post 771 Auxiliary. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Peterson of Springfield and Nancy Samson of Colchester.

Donald William Murray Jr., 57, of Springfield, died January 19, 2014. He was born in Danbury, Conn. He attended schools in the Danbury area. He married Rita M. Speakes in 1983, in Connecticut. He was employed as a caregiver at Country Village Community Care Home in Bellows Falls. Survivors include his wife, Rita, of Springfield; his mother, Betty, of Chester; three brothers: Lucien Murray of Springfield, Paul Murray of Mystic, Conn., and Chris Murray of Chester; two sisters: Yvonne Hudson of Woodbury, Conn., and Betty Ann Murray of New Hampshire.

James Calvin Payne, 15, of Perkinsville, died January 17, 2013. Calvin had passions for aggressive inline skating, freestyle skiing, parkour and technology. He enjoyed photography, drawing and making things. Despite his young age, Calvin was an accomplished videographer, having produced several polished skating-oriented short subjects. Survivors include his parents, Heather and James Payne and his younger brother, Mason.

Viola C. Paul, 77, of Baltimore, died January 6, 2014. She was born in Springfield, the daughter of Jehial and Addie (Ward) Converse. She attended Springfield schools, and graduated from Springfield High School, class of 1954. On Jan. 5, 1974, she married David A. Paul in Baltimore. She was employed as a waitress at Seward’s Restaurant in Ludlow for several years. Later, she was employed for 20 years with the lunch program at Green Mountain High School in Chester, retiring in 2005. Survivors include her husband, David, of Winter Garden, Fla.; five children, Debra Spaulding of Hartford, James Bixby of Ludlow, Timothy Bixby of Ludlow, Richard Paul of Springfield, and Wendy Williams of Baltimore.
