SPRINGFIELD -- The North School is 100 years old this year.

In celebration, there will be a Centennial Open House Saturday, where people can tour the school that was built in 1909.

Five years ago, The North Springfield Parks and Recreation group formed under the school board, and have since been in the process to develop not only the land, but helping to restore the building because it has been neglected for a number of years, according to member Jean Willard.

"We went in to try and restore it with the help of the community members," she said.

Willard said the land is ideal for practice ball games, but it is not a full-size field.

On the tour, Willard said people will "get the opportunity to see what the school is like now."

Willard said they would like to eventually turn the school into a community center and creative arts center.

This is the third open house for the school, just in time for alumni weekend.

The tour is from 1 to 3:30 p.m., and for more information, call Willard at (802) 886-2730.
