Hurricanes post a sweep in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD - On Saturday night in the first round of a pre-holiday hoop tourney, Hartford struggled with its offense and the defense let a 17-point lead dwindle to four before holding on for a 56-51 win over hosting Springfield.
The Hurricanes returned to Riverside Gym for the second round of the tourney and had no offensive or defensive troubles whatsoever in pasting Bellows Falls 85-21.
In fact the only question of the night was whether Hartford’s Dylan White was going to be able to match his brother Logan’s career high of 36 points.
Hartford coach Mike Gaudette smilingly admitted that he kept Dylan in the game through the closing moments so he could catch his brother and with less than two minutes to play Dylan drained a 3 for points 34, 35 and 36.
Draining 3s was not a novelty for White as he had nine trifectas on the night.
As a team, Hartford had 15 3s as Bellows Falls was content to stay in a zone and Hartford had numerous uncontested shots.
While both White brothers now have 36 points, Dylan, a senior, still has a way to go to get the school record of 43 held by Joey Gillam.
Bellows Falls, which was 0-20last year, is 0-2 now.
“I’m just going to forget this game was ever played,” Terrier coach Evan Chadwick said.
In fairness to Bellows Falls they are a small Division II school while Hartford toils in Division I. The Terriers should have a chance to hit the win column Friday night when Division IV Black River comes to Hadley Gym. On that same might Hartford will be at Lake Region.
Once Hartford had control of the game Gaudette said his team “worked on some things.” He knew that his team didn’t particularly shoot well in the Springfield game, but he felt the ball movement was much better Tuesday night and resulted in some open shots.
“We have some kids who can shoot the ball so we tried to get them in position to score,” Gaudette said.
Bellows Falls had a relatively decent first quarter trailing just 13-6 before White hit back-to-back 3s to close out the period. However in the second quarter turnovers and failure to apply any sort of pressure defense brought Hartford to as 45-12 lead at the half and it was 66-14 after three quarters.
Jonathan Alvin came off the Hartford bench to score his team’s first eight points of the fourth quarter and had a nine-point game. Eleven different Hurricanes scored, but White was the only one in double figures.
Drew Guild had seven points to pace Bellows Falls, which had just nine field goals in the game. http://www.rutlandherald.com/article/20101215/SPORTS/712159870
