Cosmos making their case

That weekend of March 9 could become a crowded one on the Springfield High School athletic calendar. That is the date of the inaugural Springfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame banquet and it is not out of the question that the school’s girls basketball team could be playing at the Barre Auditorium on that day.

Cosmos girls break out of funk

During the fall when Joe Costello was helping with the girls soccer team he was asked about how he thought his basketball team would do this winter and he indicated that he thought his Cosmos would win more than they would lose.

Three Birskys in 1st Cosmos Hall class

The Springfield Athletics Hall of Fame Committee has announced its inaugural class to be inducted March 9 during its first annual banquet at Springfield High School at 6 p.m.



Coach Bo Birsky's grandaughter Michelle Birsky is the lead singer/songwriter in Brooklyn-based band BIRCH.

Springfield basketball

The Springfield girls’ basketball team has split its first two games this winter. They opened by defeating Oxbow 58-41, but then dropped a nail biter 37-36 to Randolph.

Some of the toughest competitors in the area battled it out on the wrestling mats in Granville, N.Y., Saturday, Dec. 15. Springfield’s varsity grapplers stepped up to the challenge and tested their mettle.

Springfield girls lose close one at home

With 1:12 to play, Randolph was trailing Springfield 32-31 when the Galloping Ghosts coach, Scott Lafreniere, called a timeout and set up senior Amelia Mattrick to take a 3-point shot from the side. Mattrick swished the 3-pointer and Randolph went ahead 34-32 in a game they would eventually win 37-36 Wednesday.

Springfield runs past Oxbow, 58-41

The Springfield Cosmos girls basketball team shrugged off a lethargic first half and turned to their press to open up a close game, running away with a 58-41 win over Oxbow on Friday night.

Terriers trip up Cosmos

The Bellows Falls varsity boys basketball team remained undefeated with a 57-40 rout of rival Springfield on Friday evening.

Local Hoop Shoot results

Springfield Elks Lodge 1560 recently held there annual Hoop Shoot for boys and girls, ages 7 to 13. This year was a record turn out compared to years past with 43 young competitors.

Slaters open big against Cosmos, 79-25

Fair Haven threw a blanket of furious defense over Springfield and ran away to a 79-25 victory in Friday’s boys Marble Valley League season opener.

Elks Lodge #1560 annual Hoop Shoot

Springfield Elks Lodges 47th annual hoop shoot will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, at 9 a.m. at Riverside Middle School. This event will be open to all boys and girls, ages 8 to 13 based on their age as of April 1, 2019.

Springfield football had an up-and-down season in 2018, finishing at 4-5. But, ultimately they exceeded many people’s expectations given how young they were. The 14 All-State selections on their roster had a lot to do with the ups during their season.

The Edgar May Health and Recreation Center will host the annual Thanksgiving Day 5K Road Race and Walk Thursday, Nov. 22. Runners and walkers of all ages are welcome and children under the age of 12 are free.

U-32 girls pummel Springfield

The No. 4 seed U-32 girls made short work of No. 13 Springfield in a Division II soccer playdown game Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Brooke George scored four goals to power the Raiders to a convincing 8-0 victory.

Springfield Elks send six competitors to Vt. Elks State Soccer Shoot


Springfield Elks Lodge #1560 sent six local winners to the Vt. Elks Soccer shoot on Sunday, Oct. 21st in St. Albans, Vt. Those six competed against seven other Lodges, and Springfield had two winners come home with 1st place trophy’s.

Fastest Kid in Town race hosts 81 competitors


The sixth annual Fastest Kid in Town Race was another huge success; A record 81 children ages 5-12 competed in the 100- and 200-yard races held at Riverside Middle School during the 36th annual Vermont Apple Festival over Columbus Day weekend.

This & That: Two wins and a loss in area football

Recently, when I was out and about, I received a question I couldn’t answer. In some ways it should have been a simple one, but it turns out it was quite complex. At least to me. The question was: how long has it been since all three of our area football teams have won in the same week?

Cosmos take down Yellow Jackets at home, 28-20

Cosmos football (3-3) got off to a hot start on Friday night against Windsor (3-2), and were able to shoot out to a 22-0 halftime lead. Windsor didn’t roll over, as they outscored Springfield 20-6 in the second half, but the hungry Cosmos wanted the win, and the home crowd had their back.
