Freshman Brooke George scored four goals to power the Raiders to a convincing 8-0 victory. “We played really well as a team,” George said. “We moved the ball through the midfield well and found a way to connect and split the defense and make some runs. My teammates helped as we kept looking for each other and had great movement.” advertisement Caroline Kirby scored a pair of goals and dished out four assists to help the Raider cause, with Claire Obeldobel and Sasha Kennedy each scoring once. Obeldobel had a pair of assists with Kennedy, Lauren Towne and Emily Frazier each assisting once. U-32 keeper Jordon Kellett had three stops in goal, with her counterpart for Springfield, Mykahla Jasinski stopping 16. First-round playoff games are often one-sided, and the Raiders provided their fans with plenty of reason to cheer. Obeldobel’s score just five minutes into the game opened a floodgate of offense for U-32, as the Raiders managed to put up four goals in the first half. Springfield’s best opportunity to score came on a penalty kick, but Meghan Power’s kick went directly to Kellett in goal. She actually had two attempts, but the first shot was waived off because she let it fly before the referee blew the whistle. The Raiders continued to pressure Jasinski throughout the second half, despite some physical play from Springfield’s Ashley Chamberlain and Mycah White. Each time the Cosmos seemed to settle in an effort to get moving on offense, one of U-32 coach Steve Towne’s offensive weapons led an assault through the defense. “I think the girls had a lot of combination play and a lot of possession and that created a lot of scoring opportunities for us and we found the back of the net early,” Towne said. “It’s a tournament game so you prep, get ready and come out from the get-go, you go for it. You have to play hard because anything happens. “The speed of this game was high and we have some players that can get in behind the fence and make it look like we have a lot of offense.” U-32 (11-3-1) will see a familiar face in round two when they take on Montpelier on Saturday. Springfield finishes their season with a record of 5-10-0.
