Cosmos trudge past Otters in 5 overtimes
STAFF REPORT
SPRINGFIELD — Pete Peck has spent the last six years as a head coach and has never seen one of his games get past two overtimes.
Until Friday night. His Springfield Cosmos outlasted Otter Valley 78-74 through five overtimes in a Marble Valley League boys basketball game at Dressel Gym.
It was reminiscent of the game early this season between Skidmore and Southern Vermont College that went seven overtimes and made a national splash. A number of years ago, Lebanon and Laconia high schools played a seven-overtime game in New Hampshire.
Springfield and the Otters were deadlocked 49-49 after regulation time.
The Cosmos had the final possession and shot at the end of regulation and at the end of each of the first four overtimes, but could not convert.
The Otters led by 13 at halftime, but the Cosmos rallied to force the overtimes and up their record to 6-8.
The Otters fell to 2-13.
There were some dramatic 3-pointers by players to rescue their teams in the overtime stanzas. Ethan McAllister nailed a 3-pointer with under a minute left in the third overtime with his team trailing by three.
Pike Ladago did the same thing for the Otters in the fourth OT, canning a 3 with less than a minute to play to tie the game.
“There were some big shots,” Peck said.
Not surprisingly, tired legs became the story as both teams went pretty much with the same five players throughout the extra 20 minutes.
“It wasn’t real pretty down the stretch,” Peck said.
“Both teams played very well.”
Keke Frye and Ryan Kelley had 24 points apiece for the Otters. Ladago and Chris Cimonetti added 10 each.
Springfield’s Kirk Perham led all scorers with 28 points. McAllister had 17, Mike Pianka 13 and Billy Wheeler 10.
“The game didn’t want to end,” Peck said.
