AYER -- The Ayer-Shirley Regional School Committee voted last night to appoint Carl Mock of Shirley as the newly formed region's superintendent.
Mock, former superintendent of the River Valley Technical Center School District in Springfield, Vt., will take over the reins of the school district on July 1, pending contract negotiations.
Mock was one of two candidates interviewed by the School Committee for the position. The other was David Fischer, of Hopedale, who is superintendent of Bellingham schools.
Thirty-one candidates had applied. A steering committee narrowed the field to 10, and four were brought before the School Committee.
"Both of these guys could run the district," said Bob Prescott, chairman of the regional school committee. "For me, the trip to Vermont was the deciding factor. I got to see what Carl Mock got to do up there. He was an outstanding superintendent for 15 years. That's a long time."
Prescott said he found Mock to be "very passionate about education."
"I think we can get something more from Carl Mock," Prescott said. "We're at a point where we have to do that now."
School Committee member Patrick Kelly agreed Mock was the obvious choice.
"In the end, the difference maker for me, which I came to over this past weekend, was Mr. Mock has a passion for education that I haven't seen in too many people," he said.
Mock also served as superintendent and assistant superintendent of the Hartford School
District in White River Junction, Vt.
He holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and education from Dartmouth College and a master's in education with a concentration in administration and planning from the University of Vermont.
Fischer earned a bachelor's degree in 1974 from the State University College of Geneseo; a master of education in counselor education from State University of New York at Buffalo in 1976; a master of education in educational administration from State University in 1980; and a specialist in educational administration from State University of New York in 1984.
In other news, the search for a principal for the high school is down to two candidates, according to interim Ayer Superintendent George Frost.
They include Deborah Caligaris, currently interim principal of Gardner High School; and Brian Cote, assistant principal for the Nashoba Regional School District in Bolton.
Both will visit the district later this week before the School Committee makes its decision.
The School Committee is also expected to certify its fiscal 2012 budget, which stands at $21,566,575, at its March 16 meeting.
