Drama in Springfield
April 9, 2011 - Springfield, Vermont
Hundreds of students are hoping to "break-a-leg" at the Vermont State Drama Festival in Springfield. Teachers say the competition will stay with students through every stage of life.
Ryan Gottschalk knows how to put on a show. He's been acting for eleven years.
"I really love acting and I can't wait to try it professionally," said the Springfield High School drama student.
But that doesn't mean he doesn't still get nervous...
"Today I'm a little nervous, yesterday and today because it's actually my first time on stage without lines memorized," Gottschalk said.
He's MC-ing the Vermont State Drama Festival at Springfield high school. Twelve schools came to compete with one-act plays for a chance to go to the New England Drama festival later this month. But, only two will make the cut. These twelve already up-staged schools in their regions to make it here. But drama teachers say while it is a competition, it's more about the learning experience.
"They're learning to talk in front of people to be comfortable in a social setting and performing in front of their peers, adults and learning very good communication skills," said Springfield High drama director Rebecca Skrypeck.
In-between performances students participate in acting, music and other art workshops.
"Student forums and director forums where they talk and discuss each show, do some constructive criticism," Skrypeck said.
It's been nearly 30 years since Springfield hosted this event.
"I think it's going to give them a good opportunity now to shine and say hey look we're doing something great," Skrypeck said.
"It's going to teach me to be a better me in the end," Gottschalk said.
He says it will stay with him through every stage of life.
