Springfield — Staffers and volunteers of the non-profit Springfield Humane Society, like those working at similar small, rural animal shelters, have their hands full caring for abandoned and stray animals. At the same time, they are trying to find loving homes for these animals while struggling to keep the shelter's lights on and the furnance running during winter months.
That's why when Tom Browe, director of the SHS' Coucher Memorial Animal Hospital and Shelter in Springfield received a call from an area Comcast representive, he was both stunned and thrilled.
"We were honored and pleased to be chosen as a recipient organization for the annual Comcast Cares Day employee volunteer effort," Browe said. "On a gloomy Saturday morning last week, 45 Comcast employee-volunteers arrived to work at our facilities. And work they did!"
According to Browe, the society's garden beds were raked, thinned and mulched; railings and foundation walls were painted; old latticework around the porch was replaced; the building was power-washed; bushes were trimmed, and the lawn was thatched.
According to Comcast volunter Mike Felton of Chester, "We were very happy to help out. Many of us have pets and we love the animals. It was all in a day's work."
