Cosmos beat MSJ, stay alive for playoff berth
STAFF REPORT
The Springfield Cosmos got a win at storied St. Peter’s Field on Saturday that they desperately needed. The Cosmos were tied for the 15th spot in the battle to get into the Division II baseball tournament when the day began and improved their stock by beating Mount St. Joseph Academy 12-6.
“We had to win this one,” Springfield coach Larry Partridge said.
Now, they have a lineup next week to conclude the season that includes Brattleboro, Windsor and Hartford. The Cosmos take a 3-10 record into the week.
Partridge and the Cosmos got on the bus pretty happy about the win, but MSJ coach Jake Downey was pretty pleased with his own club after fighting its way back into the game from a 10-2 deficit.
“I told the players that I was the happiest with this game by far than any other game this year,” Downey said.
“Sometimes this season they put their head down when they got behind but not today.”
Downey said the recent win over Otter Valley did wonders for his 1-11 team’s morale.
“The first practice after that win everyone was here early and ready to go. I wish we could have got the win earlier,” Downey said.
Springfield’s Jeff Fuller was the game’s hitting star. He had three hits, a sacrifice fly and five RBI.
Kirk Perham was also a big piece of the offense with two hits and three runs scored.
“Our (playoff) chances are definitely better now,” Perham said. “Now, we know we can win.
“If we keep working hard, keep swinging the bats and playing defense we can do it.”
Perham said his base hits were the result of being selective.
“I was just being patient and looking for my pitch,” he said.
Taylor Fontaine had three hits, including a double, for the Cosmos, and Ethan McAllister chipped in with two safeties.
The beneficiary of all this offense was winning pitcher Jeremy Currie.
Adam DiBlasio led the Mounties with three hits. He had a double and also scored three runs.
Cody Landon had two hits for MSJ.
The Cosmos put an exclamation point on the victory with a game-ending double play.
“Give MSJ credit. They battled back,” Partridge said.
“Jeremy Currie gave up two runs in the first inning but he settled in nicely after that.”
Collin Gilbert took the loss.
“We’ve got some talent. They just have to start believing in themselves,” Downey said.
The Mounties finish the season with games against Rutland, Poultney and Bellows Falls.
Downey will send Matt Sanborn to the mound to begin the final week on Tuesday against Rutland.
