9... 10... 11... RiverSweep

The Black River Action Team held its 12th annual Riversweep clean up day on 9/10/11 with some modifications due to unsafe high waters still too muddy to see anything below the surface.
Laura Wesson and Marita Johnson, RiverSweep overseers for Springfield,  display early returns at trash headquarters in the Shopping Plaza
There was no shortage of volunteers this Saturday but the amount of trash and metal collected was much less than previous years.  It was suspected much had washed away and out of town via the Connecticut River during the recent heavy flooding.  The annual event is normally scheduled in August when river is at its lowest but this year was moved ahead to September so as not to conflict with Springfield's 250th celebration.   Because of the river's swollen state, the usual focus of only collecting trash and debris from in and along the river was changed to include helping flood victims along the Black River from Springfield to Plymouth. Volunteers helped to sort donated food and other items, remove large debris from the flooding, lend a hand cleaning out flooded buildings as well as collect whatever trash there was a safe distance from riverbanks.

Black River Action Team founder Kelly Stettner supervised the efforts at the Ludlow end.  Free t-shirts and gloves were given out to all volunteers at both sites and then a free donated lunch at the end of the 4 hour clean up effort. More...

    1. Sorry I never saw this! I'm happy to provide a tee shirt for a donation...I humbly suggest $10, and will either deliver or mail it to you. My email is blackrivercleanup(at)yahoo(dot)com, give me a shout and I'll get right on it. Thanks! ~ Kelly Stettner, Director B.R.A.T.

  2. I don't understand why people have to throw stuff in the water to begin with. It is awesome that there are people willing to clean it out. Keep up the good work.

  3. Wake up Lisa. This town is a magnet for low lifes. I see cockroaches daily pushing shopping carts around town. Where the hell do you think those carts end up? If we had an ambitious police dept, such would be arrested for theft. On the rare occasion a prosecution has happened, the offender was sentenced to playing with pets at the humane society.
Springfield couldn't suck more then it already does.

  5. I look at you as a low life Mr. Angry anonymous person! Instead of being so damn negative all the time why don't you do something to change it! Take part in the community! If you don't like what you see in Springfield step forward speak up! And by speaking up I don't mean leave negative comments on a local blog! Go before the Select board! Hell, run for the select board. Do what ever it takes to make a difference. Leaving nasty comments on this blog isn't going to change a thing!!!!!!

  6. Also referring to other human beings as cockroaches is straight up bigotry! You are no better then them! Who are you to look down on anyone? I just don't understand how someone can have so much hatred towards a town and its people! Get over it already!!
