Bouts of great interest on tap for Golden Gloves finale

BURLINGTON - The championship bouts of the 2012 Northern New England Vermont Golden Gloves Tournament will take place on Saturday night at Memorial Auditorium. All the action gets under way at 7:30 p.m.
A national champion will meet a world champion in the women�s 125-pound Open division. Liz Leddy, the 2011 national Golden Gloves champion, will face World Ringside Champion Amber Blumenfeld. Leddy, out of the Portland Boxing Club, has been boxing for a number of years and has won numerous New England Championships as well. She is a cosmetologist/barber from Portland, Maine.
Blumenfeld won the 2010 Ringside World Amateur novice championship in 2010 and in 2011 won the Ringside World Amateur girls open championship. The Ringside World Championships are held each year in Kansas City, Mo., with more than 14 countries participating. Blumenfeld is from Springfield and boxes out of the Claremont (N.H.) Boxing Club. She is a student at Springfield High School.
Another bout drawing a lot of attention is in the 178-pound Novice division. Brayton Gillett of the Cornwall Boxing Club will go toe to toe with Corey Mathews of the West Burke Club. Both of these boxers have won all their tournament matches by knockouts.
Novice champs will continue to Lowell, Mass., for the New England Novice Championships on the Feb. 10 and 16. Open champions also go to Lowell for the New England Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions on Feb. 21 and 22.
The New England champions then head to Mesquite, Nev., for the Golden Gloves National Championships at the end of April.
The doors open at 6 p.m. Saturday night.
