Jacks get convincing win over Cosmos

SPRINGFIELD — Bruce Mackay may have had his Windsor girls basketball team at Dressel Gym in Springfield Tuesday night, but he really felt he was way beyond that location. “I’ve been in heaven since I took this job six years ago,” he said.
Mackay had that heavenly feeling after his team won for the 12th time in 13 games with a convincing 59-40 victory, putting a damper on the Cosmos senior night.
The loss may have done more than take the gloss off what was a festive evening for Springfield as the Cosmos are in danger of falling out of the top eight and losing the home court edge in the first round of the Division II playoffs. Springfield, 10-9, was sixth at game time, but there were five teams with between eight and 10 losses in a dogfight for the final two home spots. Springfield has just one game remaining, but it is up at Oxbow, home of the Division III’s top-seeded team.
“I think we have win to on Friday night,” said Springfield coach Joe Brown.
Windsor is 15-4 with a high index rating because of the number of Division II teams the Division III Yellow Jackets play. They are in second place and close out the regular season hosting Mill River on Friday night.
The Jacks have won the Division III championship each of the last two years and while they have lost four times this season, three of the losses were to Division II teams. The only Division III loss was to Oxbow.
Windsor’s route to success last night was moving the ball around for the good shot, a great second half off the offensive board and depth that just raised havoc with the Springfield ball handlers.
“Windsor is noted for that,” said Brown of the Windsor defense.
What Windsor couldn’t do for a while was find Chelsea McAllister who had 15 first half points including all 13 of her team’s second-quarter points.
“I thought we controlled her pretty well in the second half,” said Mackay. That they did as she had just three second-half points.
Springfield, which never led in the game, fell quickly behind 9-2. Brown called three timeouts in the first period and settled his team down a bit, trailing just 14-8 at the end of one and 27-21 at the half. However, in the second half, after the Cosmos had clawed back to trail just 27-24 early in the third quarter, the Jacks closed out the period with a 17-7 run and a game-controlling 44-31 edge. The strength of the run was the board work of Allison Wilcox, Grace Peters and Nikki Kibling.
“We just couldn’t get any rhythm and get a long run going,” said Brown.
McAllister ended up with a game-high 18 points. Morgan Johnson followed with eight and Sarah Gray seven. Windsor got 15 points from Wilcox and the scrappy guard duo of Abby Wright and Kim White had 24 as Wright had 14 and White 10.
It was the second time the Jacks topped the Cosmos this winter, winning 70-50 at Windsor on Jan. 27.
