“Anything Goes” For Springfield Alumni

SPRINGFIELD, VT -Excitement and anticipation grows as the Springfield High School Alumni Weekend draws near. Many classes and local businesses are busy finishing up their entries for the Alumni parade. Tradition shows, though, that there is more to Alumni Weekend than just the parade.
On Friday, June 15, the kickoff to the weekend’s fun is started at the Crown Point Country Club with the Annual Alumni Golf tournament. Sign up your foursome and join the fun or contact Bill Flore at 885-2507 and he will see to it that you are put on a team. Check in at 12:30 p.m. for the 18-Hole Scramble that starts at 1 p.m. More details on the event can be found at www.shsalumni.com.
Friday evening is the traditional Alumni Banquet, held at the Elks Club on Park Street. The Social Hour begins at 6 p.m. with dinner being served at 7 p.m.. Entrée choices include prime rib, stuffed chicken breast, or baked haddock. Dinner is $25.00 per person and reservations must be made by June 9 by calling Brenda at 802-886-8085 or Mary at 802-885-3170. Payment may be sent in advance to Brenda Markwell, 384 River Street, Apt. C, Springfield, VT or Mary MacMahan, 28 Harlow Road, Springfield, VT., or you may pay at the door.
Attendance at the banquet has been building from year to year and we expect the same to hold true this year. It’s an evening you’ll not want to miss! Not only will you enjoy a wonderful dinner but you will also see the crowning of the Alumni Queen and King; you will meet the recipients of the Millett, Bruce, O’Leary, Paul, and Cross scholarships; and you will witness the introduction of the charter members of the Roberta Stokes Smith Hall of Fame. Let us know if you have a group that would like to be seated together and we will arrange it. Spending the evening in the company of longtime friends is a great way to start the weekend!
Saturday, June 16, sees the formation of the much-loved Alumni Parade. Beginning on Clinton Street in front of the Jones & Lamson building, the presentation of Classic Cars, floats, and bands winds its way up through town. Spectators claim their viewing area early, so don’t dally! Get your famous Alumni popcorn and enjoy the fun! Keep watch for the official Alumni Bucket Brigade, toting their collection buckets and hoping you will continue to be generous with your donations. Show your support for your favorite entry by giving it a round of applause as it passes by you.
As the parade enters the Riverside parking lot, you should head that way, too. Area vendors will be there selling yummies for your tummies. The Classic Cars and the floats will be on display until judging of the floats is final. There will be a jumping tent for the kids. Join the Alumni Association under the tent for their Annual Meeting and see if your favorite float wins a prize!
The visiting continues or maybe you make lunch plans with a friend you haven’t seen in years. Whichever the case, be sure to rally back at Riverside by 4:30 p.m. for the women’s soccer match, organized by Coach Kendall. Immediately following is the men’s match. Check out www.shsalumni.com for more details on how you can be part of the fun.
It is a weekend of fun that we are happy to put together for you. Your support of the efforts of the Association means a lot when we are able to turn that support into scholarships for deserving graduates. Anything Goes? Well, sure that’s possible but more than likely you can count on this --- a weekend of friendship, fun, and making memories and that, my friends, is a winning combination.
