Springfield Hosts 31st Annual Apple Festival Submitted by VT Journal on Tue, 10/01/2013 - 3:14pm SPRINGFIELD, VT -For more than three decades, Springfield has made Columbus Day weekend a time of community celebration. Hundreds of visitors flock to the Apple Festival in an annual pilgrimage. The Apple Festival is an all-day affair, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 12. With more than 50 crafters and artisans to choose from, Festival attendees get a head start on their holiday shopping. This is a great opportunity for area residents to support the local economy and for visitors to the region to take home a unique Vermont-made item. Offerings include handblown glass, wooden products, floral arrangements, sweaters, and much, much more. There are scented soy candles, skin care creams, and pickles preserved in country kitchens. You can take home a wooden wine rack or a tempting baked good. One can surprise a loved one with a framed photograph from our beautiful region or a special handcarved sign. Families can take in some old-fashioned fun while listening to area musicians. Carnival games offer a challenge for older children, while younger children can delight in the bouncy house or take a pony ride. Special guests Lindsay and her Puppet Pals will provide two enchanting performances at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. At noontime, the Edgar May Health & Recreation Center hosts the Fastest Kid in Town Race, with age brackets between 5 and 12 years of age and no charge to enter. Other kid activities include mini-bowling and a watershed table. An abundance of soul-warming food is one of the hallmarks of the Apple Festival. Chili, pulled pork, Italian sausages, fried bread dough…No one needs to go home hungry! Festival-goers can enjoy apple crisp for dessert or buy a pie to take home. The Springfield Farmer’s Market will also be part of the Festival, providing the opportunity to stock up on fresh local produce. In another annual tradition, local pie bakers will drop their creations off in the morning for the noontime judging of pies. The Pie Baking Contest will give prizes for both the Best Traditional and Best Original pies. Key event sponsors include VABIR, Susan Dana & Associates, Lane Eye Associates, HB Energy Solutions, the Springfield Housing Authority, and Wellwood Orchards. Admission is FREE and the Festival is rain or shine, so come join in the fun! Springfield is the place to be on October 12 for the ANNUAL VERMONT APPLE FESTIVAL.
