Sleeping woman breaks legs in Cavendish crash February 05,2014 Rutland Herald CAVENDISH — A 20-year-old Springfield woman received serious injuries early Tuesday morning after she fell asleep in her car and proceeded to hit a tree. Brandi Pelkey called 911 shortly after 4 a.m. to report her vehicle had crashed into a tree on Depot Street, Vermont State Police Trooper Nicholas Arlington reported. Responders needed more than an hour to extract the driver. Pelkey, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, broke her legs and received severe lower body injuries, although authorities deemed none life-threatening. She was taken by helicopter to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Her 1996 Geo Prizm received heavy front-end damage and was destroyed. Investigation revealed that Pelkey was traveling south on Route 103 when she fell asleep, Arlington said. Her vehicle left the roads, traveled down a slight embankment and struck the tree.
She wasn't asleep at the wheel, though.
