Chief: Baseball bat incident occurred prior to shooting June 11,2014 By Brent Curtis Staff Writer Springfield Police Chief Doug Johnston said police were initially called to the area of a shooting on Summer Street today for a report of a man chasing another individual up a hill with a baseball bat. Whether that incident is related to the shooting that sent three people to the hospital at 3:35 p.m. is unclear, the chief said. However, two of the individuals who were taken to the hospital are being treated for injuries to their heads that the chief said were not gunshot wounds. Only one individual was shot, the chief said, suffering a wound to the torso. Johnson declined to identify any of the injured parties, saying only it was a mix of adult men and women in the apartment. Police are still searching for two suspects who they say are no longer in the area. No information about their idenities has been released by police. Johnston also declined to speculate on any motive for the shooting and said speficially he did not know if was drug related. "There is a lot of things going on in this case that will probably come together over time," he said.
