This wood doll was made by the firm of D.M. Smith Co in Springfield, Vermont. Circa 1879 - 1885. These dolls had heads made of a wood core with composition over it. The body is fully jointed with spoon type hands and blue painted metal feet. The spoon type hands indicate this doll is one of the earlier dolls made by the firm. As you can see, her hair has been repainted as well as much of her face. There is cracking on her head, see pictures. Her hip joints are not as tight as her knees joints are. These dolls are very hard to find in excellent condition and most that I have seen are in acout the same condition as this one. She is approximately 12" tall. Even though she has wear, she has her charm! Item ID: 428
The D.M. Smith Company purportedly decided to establish operations in Springfield at the encouragement of Springfield on the Dole, according to its publicity seeking Executive Director; who incidentally may claim to have served as the model for the doll. In other news, the town's charging station has not yet charged any vehicles.
