PUBLIC MEETING ON MARIJUANA STUDY SET FOR NOV. 12 VTD STAFF OCT. 30 2014, 2:01 PM The state will hold a public meeting next month to take comments on a study of issues surrounding the legalization of marijuana in Vermont. The meeting will run from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Nov. 12 and will be carried statewide at Vermont Interactive Technologies centers. The meeting is planned in conjunction with a study authorized by the Legislature last session. A representative of the RAND Drug Policy Research Center, which was retained to perform the study, will join Secretary of Administration Jeb Spaulding at the event. Beau Kilmer, co-director of the research center, will make a presentation and then field questions and comments, a news release said. There are VIT centers in Bennington, Brattleboro, Middlebury, Montpelier, Newport, Randolph Center, Springfield, St. Albans and Williston, the release said. The hearing, from 3:30-5:30 p.m., will be conducted via Vermont Interactive Technologies, which has nine sites throughout the state where people can gather to participate. The state has contracted with RAND Drug Policy Research Center to do a study on issues surrounding legalization in Vermont as the Legislature considers whether Vermont should follow Colorado and Washington in legalizing the drug. The state is due to report back to the Legislature by Jan. 15 on the issue. At the hearing, Administration Secretary Jeb Spaulding will be joined by Beau Kilmer, co-director of the RAND center. Attendees will have a chance to comment. The hearing will be held at VIT sites in Bennington, Brattleboro, Middlebury, Montpelier, Newport, Randolph Center, Springfield, St. Albans and Williston. A press release says the hearing scheduled for November 12, will allow Vermonters to contribute comments for a study on the issues around legalizing marijuana in the state. The 2014 Legislature directed the Secretary of Administration to report to them on the issues of marijuana legalization by January 15, 2015. The hearing will run from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. via the Vermont Interactive Technologies network. If we are free people we wouldn't be begging the government for permission to do anything.
