WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — A judge told a Weathersfield man his performance on probation was “pretty much as bad as it gets” and jailed him without bail for allegedly trafficking in heroin and bath salts.
Joshua Martin, 29, pleaded innocent to the new felony charge of heroin trafficking, which came after Vermont State Police stopped a vehicle Monday on Interstate 91 in Guilford. Police were acting on a tip relayed by the Vermont Drug Task Force.
Trooper Max Trenosky said Martin was concealing 400 bags of heroin and 3 grams of bath salts in his pants. The trooper said Martin at first refused to remove the parcel, then turned over the drugs, which were stamped “New World.” During Martin’s arraignment Tuesday at White River Junction criminal court, defense attorney Elizabeth Kruska told Judge Karen Carroll that Martin moved to Vermont a decade ago from Rhode Island with his parents. He has been driving daily from Springfield to Brattleboro for drug treatment, she said.
In December, Kruska said, Martin is due in a Massachusetts court to resolve a drug charge there.
Carroll characterized Martin’s year on probation as a failure, noting that he was charged in September with two felony counts of selling heroin to undercover informants in Springfield.
“We need to protect the public from Mr. Martin at this time,” the judge said.
She ordered him held without bail pending trial on what are now three felony cases in Vermont.

A VERY prime example of why furlough and terms of release etc DONT WORK. Consequences DO!
ReplyDeleteIf this perp had been locked up for his first two felonies he wpould not have been free to commit more felonies that endanger the public and law enforcement. Judge Carroll needs to start protecting the public instead of the criminals.
ReplyDeleteNO JUSTICE = NO PEACE!!! Maybe we should burn down our town to protest? Oh wait, we don't have an autozone.....
ReplyDeleteIt could be said that Judge Karen Carroll is a greater liability to the safety of Springfield's residents than the dozens of felons she has unleashed on us.
