SPRINGFIELD Dealing with a nine-player varsity roster is not what Springfield’s Joe Brown would like see, but that’s what he’s got. “You know, I’m optimistic but disappointed with the low numbers,” said Brown. “There are some practice glitches with the lack of players.” One of the reasons Brown is optimistic is that one of the players returning is 1,000-point scorer Chelsea McAllister. However, McAllister has been a known quantity since her freshman year and now every time she takes the court she is looking at being double teamed. “She’s used to that,” said Brown. Others back and expected to see plenty of playing time are Nicole Patterson, Brooke Willey and Diamond Bruso. Brown is also hopeful that Jordan Phelps will make a significant contribution. Once again, Brown hopes to push the ball on offense, play man-to-man defense and get some transition points. “We’re not very deep so conditioning may be an issue,” said Brown. Springfield opens Dec. 3, hosting Leland and Gray.
