Ainsley Bertone and Ciana Winston sing during the Art Show Submitted by VT Journal on Tue, 03/17/2015 - 12:22pm By LAUREN DRASLER The Shopper SPRINGFIELD, VT -On Thursday, March 12, community members gathered at Springfield High School to attend the 13th Annual Arts Festival. The theme of this year’s festival was reflections, and the event featured artwork, dance performances, music, theater and a variety of refreshments. The Arts Festival was held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and was free for the public to attend. Though there is no way to know exactly how many people attended the event, Springfield High School Art Teacher Lisa Murray said that this year’s Arts Festival appeared to be better attended than in previous years. “It seems way more crowded this year,” she said. “It could be because of the setup, or because of the publicity we’ve gotten. I’m not sure exactly why, but it’s good to see.” During the event, the cafeteria at the high school was transformed into an art exhibit. Artwork from Murray’s students was on display, but there were also a variety of other classes that participated in the event. The Spanish classes made Mexican candlesticks, Dave Slivka’s Global Studies class made Chinese pottery and Marlene Allen’s math class participated by making Radical Reflections posters. An open dress rehearsal of Superheroes by Ian McWethy was performed in the auditorium at 5 p.m., which was followed by a Dance Performance at 5:30 p.m. There were also numerous musical performances including solos, duets, madrigal singers and the wind ensemble. All of these musical pieces took place in the cafeteria, so those in attendance could enjoy the music, while looking at the artwork on display. The Anime Club provided beverages; desserts were provided and sold by the German Club, and the Class of 2016 was in charge of the food at the event. Cosmos Blankets were also sold during the Arts Festival and proceeds from these sales benefitted the Class of 2015. Though many of those in attendance came to the Arts Festival to support their own children, others came simply to support all the students and the arts. “I think I’ve come to every other Arts Festival,” Riverside Middle School Music Teacher Cindy Hughes said. “I’m a strong supporter of the arts, and I come to not only support the arts, but to support my former students as well.” Hughes said that what she enjoys most about attending the event every year is seeing how her students have grown and changed from middle school to high school. “It’s fun for me to see how the students have improved in their dance, drama and music,” she said. “I’ve known some of the students since middle school, so it’s great to see how they’ve grown and matured from then to now.” Another person that attended the Arts Festival to support the students is Jenny Anderson, who is the nurse for Springfield High School. “I’ve come to a few other Arts Festivals, but I decided to come this year because I work at the high school, and I wanted to support the students,” Anderson said. Though she has come to other Arts Festivals in the past, Anderson said she is always impressed by the artwork the students produce. “I’m always amazed at what the students are able to do,” she said. “I really like the self-reflection vases, but all the artwork is great.” Another person in attendance at the Arts Festival was Crystal Stokarski, who came to the event to support her daughter Katelyn. Katelyn had participated in the Arts Festival since she was in ninth grade, and is currently a senior who will be attending Quinnipiac University next year. “Katie [Stokarski] has been in the Arts Festival for the past four years, so I come to support her,” Crystal Stokarski said. Though Stokarski’s main reason for attending the event is to support her daughter, she said she also enjoys all the other artwork as well. “I like to see all the different mixtures of artwork,” she said. “The music to go along with the festival is beautiful as well.” - See more at: http://www.vermontjournal.com/content/ainsley-bertone-and-ciana-winston-sing-during-art-show#sthash.2Ebms8wP.dpuf
