Fire damages home on Church Street

A mid-afternoon fire today damaged the home of one of Springfield's five School Board Directors, Kenneth Vandenburgh.

The home's wood pellet stove is thought to have been the cause of the fire.

Church Street is in the Main Street village section of North Springfield.

  1. I was listening in on the police scanner when this was happening. There was a kid home alone when this happened and DCF was called in. Not sure how old the kid was but it must of been pretty scary for them.

  2. Prayers for this family. They are the first to help anyone. Hopefully they get some help themselves.

  3. The Vandenburgs had their prior home at the same address burn down in the late 1990's. Either they have the worst luck ever or something weird is going on at 5 Church street.

  4. Copied from Facebook posting - Barbara Hussey Vandenburgh: It was my house, the NOT an adult will be an adult in 8 days. She's a senior and came home from school. She smelled smoke and called 911. Thank goodness she was home because it could have been way worse. The cat is okay, too.

  5. The "kid" is a senior in high school. She actually called 911, which expedited the fire department. Unsure about the DCF call....seems like an assumption because someone heard the word kid...

  6. Glad to hear the "kid" is an older teenager. I think sometimes when things are vague, we all tend to assume the worse. I also have a police scanner and listen in frequently, many times in emergencies things are being said that just do not make a lot of sense to us or limited info is being reported. But besides all that, I am sorry for this family and I am sure it was terrifying for the teenager, I hope everyone is safe and the family can recover quickly.
