SPRINGFIELD -- A large willow tree that is hanging over Clinton Street has been secured and will be taken down on Monday, according to Springfield Police.
The tree had the base of its trunk crack Thursday during some high winds, creating concern that it would collapse into Clinton Street, which is a main road into downtown Springfield
Springfield Police Lt. Mark Fountain said Friday morning that the tree service that had been hired to take down the tree had had equipment problems that morning and because of the inclement weather forecast for Saturday, the decision was made to postpone the tree removal until Monday.
He said the tree, which is located at the end of Furnace Street and overlooks Clinton Street, would be "topped off" Monday and then removed. He said the police department was working with the property owner about what to do.
If the tree did come down, it would have block all four lanes of Clinton Street, he said.
He said Clinton Street on Monday would initially closed, and then reopened to limited lanes while the tree was being taken down. He said the plan was subject to change if there were new developments.
"Sometime after 9 a.m. Monday, it will come down," said Fountain..
