At approximately 3:30 p.m. on March 9, 2015 the Springfield Fire Department was dispatched to the above location for a report of a fire in the basement in the area of a pellet stove. On arrival crews found fire on the South end of the structure and a moderate smoke condition throughout. Crews were able to make entry into the first floor and basement levels and knock the fire down keeping the extent of fire damage to the South end of the structure on those floors, and the exterior siding, while also saving the family pets that remained in the structure. Smoke and water damage extended to other areas of the structure.
The Springfield Fire Department contacted the Vermont State Police and requested an origin and cause fire investigation be conducted. Fire Investigators with the Department of Public Safety's Fire Investigation Unit responded to the scene on March 10, 2015. The fire appears to have originated in the area of a pellet stove vent pipe. At this time, the cause of the fire is listed as undetermined, however, it is not considered "suspicious".
Although damages are estimated to be in excess of $25,000, the sole occupant of the building at the time of the fire was able to escape without injury.
The Springfield Fire Department received mutual aid assistance on scene from the Ascutney, Westminster, and Bellows falls fire departments, the Charlestown Ambulance Service, and the Springfield Police Department. Charlestown Fire Department and Golden Cross Ambulance Service provided fire and EMS coverage from the Springfield Fire station during the incident, and the American Red Cross assisted the family.
The Division of Fire Safety would like to remind everyone to test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly, and replace them in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Additionally, it is always recommended to hire properly licensed and trained people when installing plumbing, heating, and electrical equipment.
