The search for a murder suspect in Springfield, Vt., led law enforcement officials to Keene this morning.
Gregory A. Smith, 30, of Springfield is wanted in connection with the shooting death of Wesley Wing near Jake's Market in Springfield on Saturday night, according to a news release from the Springfield Police Department and Vermont State Police.
Investigators from the Vermont agencies joined forces with the Keene Police Department after learning Smith might be in the city, the news release said. Authorities then executed a search warrant at a Keene residence, but found that Smith had already fled the area, according to the news release.
The search came after investigators from Vermont secured an arrest warrant for Smith for second-degree murder, according to the news release.
Keene Police Sgt. Christopher L. Simonds said this afternoon that a search warrant was executed at 33 Page St. this morning, and the department first became involved in the investigation at about 1 a.m. today.
He said the Keene Police Department's tactical team and BearCat were used during the search.
A woman who lives on Page Street said Keene police were active at the home across the street from her house from 7 to 10 a.m. today.
Springfield Police Chief Douglas Johnston said this afternoon that Smith has a friend in Keene, which is what led investigators to the city.
Investigators currently don't know where Smith is, Johnston said.
"What we're doing is putting the information out nationwide," he said.
He said Smith has a criminal record, but declined to comment on it in part because of the ongoing investigation. He did say there was some assaultive behavior in Smith's record.
During the search, a 2011 black Infinity that Smith was believed to have been driving was seized by the Keene Police Department, according to the news release from Vermont authorities. Smith is now believed to be operating a 2004 white Buick Rendezvous with N.H. registration 3364095, the news release said. The vehicle has a pink "NY" symbol on its rear window, and a "zebra heart" decal on the left rear passenger side window.
Simonds said that at 6:52 a.m. today the Keene Police Department received the report of a stolen Buick from Citizens Way. He said he wasn't able to confirm the stolen vehicle was the one Smith was suspected of driving.
Smith was last seen wearing blue jeans, a black shirt, grey and lime running shoes, and a N.Y. Yankees hat with lime green and white lettering, according to the Vermont news release.
Police ask anyone with information to contact the Springfield Police Department at 802-885-2113 or any barracks of the Vermont State Police, the news release said.
Simonds said there is no danger to the public in Keene at this time.
