POULTNEY, Vt. - Richford won the Division 3 softball state championship Saturday defeating Leland and Gray, 4-1.
"It's amazing. I mean, we were here last year. We won one, but just winning it this year is so much better because I'm a senior," Richford senior, Hannah Gleason said. "I knew we just had to cheer so loud in the dugout and get people going and get momentum going in our favor and I guess we did it."
Leland and Gray scored the first run of the day on a Jordan Gouger RBI single in the first. The Rockets take a 2-1 lead in the second and never look back with RBIs from Allie O'Brien and Jalyn Collins. Alexandria Benoit struck out 14 for Richford.
The Division 2 state championship went to BFA-Fairfax, beating Springfield, 5-1.
"Ending my career at BFA with a championship, it's all I've ever looked forward to and I'm so happy I had the team behind me this year," Fairfax senior, Kayla Nester said.
Springfield got the first run of the game in the first inning on a Chelsea McAllister RBI triple The Bullets answer with 3 runs in the bottom of the first. Kayla Mathieu and Julia Stergas had RBI singles.
"It felt great with my seniors, like Kayla Nester, working together and it was a good way to end my senior year," Mathieu said. "We're all so close and it was a good way to end it."
Nester added to a 4-1 lead in the 6th with an RBI single for the final run of the game.
