Published June 11, 2015 in the Rutland Herald Springfield names Saypack as football coach By Poody Walsh Correspondent SPRINGFIELD — When Rich Saypack was coaching the Springfield football team many years ago, he was in a Springfield supermarket when a fan came up to him and said, “I’m not so concerned about winning as much as I am concerned about getting better every week.” That pretty much is what Saypack is thinking about as he was recently hired to take another stab at coaching the Cosmos. Saypack has been involved with Springfield football first from 1999-2001, and he was on Mike Hatt’s staff when the team won the 2008 Division III title and lost in the championship game in 2009. Saypack was also an assistant to Hatt in 2010 and 2011 in Brattleboro. Saypack (57) will replace Greg Harris, who was not asked to come back after one season. “We’re very excited to have a man of his experience running our football program,” said Springfield Athletic Director Joe Brown. “His character should be an influence on our players.” The Springfield football program has been going through some lean years and Saypack knows the route to success is building. One of those building blocks is youth football and that program will return to Springfield after several years. Saypack is also pleased that Todd Aiken will return to coach the middle school team. Saypack said he would like to have Aiken on his high school staff, but added “he may be more valuable at the middle school level.” Unlike most years when Bellows Falls was the last game of the season, this year it will be the first game. That game will be played at Brown Field, but two of the first six games are on the road for the Cosmos.
We will see how he does. I for one am very concerned for the athletes in SHS. Thankfully my son graduated last year. Please tell me Jim Fog is not part of the program this year!
