Free health and wellness classes offered by Springfield Medical Care Systems
Springfield Medical Care Systems is offering eight different health and wellness classes for October through December. There is no charge for any program but registration is requested.

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield Medical Care Systems is offering the following free health and wellness classes for October through December. There is no charge for any program but registration is requested. For more information or to register, call (802) 886-8946 or email cht@springfieldmed.org.
Healthier Living with Chronic Conditions is a Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) that helps individuals with chronic conditions learn how to manage and improve their health. The program focuses on issues that are common to individuals living with any chronic condition, such as pain management, nutrition, exercise, medication use, emotions and communicating with doctors. Class will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 1 through Nov. 5, at The Fireplace Room at Rockingham Medical Group, 1 Hospital Court in Bellows Falls. Lunch will be provided.
Learning to Live Well with Diabetes will be offered in two sessions. This four-week program is an opportunity for individuals newly diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes to learn the best management strategies, and also serves as a great “refresher” for those previously diagnosed with diabetes, who may benefit from a review. The class covers all comprehensive areas of diabetes education, including, “What is diabetes/pre-diabetes?” an introduction to and use of goal setting and action planning, nutrition, physical activity, stress management, monitoring of blood sugar, medications and managing and preventing risk of complications of diabetes. This program will be led by a certified diabetes educator.
Session 1 will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Mondays Oct. 5 to Oct. 26 at Springfield Health Center, 100 River St. in Springfield. Session 2 will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays, Nov. 4 to Nov. 25 at the Springfield Health Center, 100 River St., in Springfield.
Wellness Recovery & Action Plan (WRAP) — Create positive change and increase your enjoyment of life. Learn to effectively manage a variety of situations, including sadness, substance abuse, panic attacks, diabetes, arthritis or weight loss. Increase your health and well-being by developing your personal action plan. The class will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 12 to Nov. 30 Springfield Health Center, 100 River St., in Springfield. Light refreshments will be provided.
Weight Loss & Wellness for Adults — This five-session series is a weight and wellness program designed to help adults looking to lose weight or maintain weight they've lost, in a healthy way, with the assistance of registered dietitian nutritionist, and the support of other program participants with similar goals. Topics addressed in this series will be physical activity, appetite regulation, emotional eating, combating food cravings, meal planning, and behavior modification tools. Each class will last approximately one hour and include an educational component as well as an opportunity for participants to share ideas and report on progress or stumbling blocks. The class is held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 14 to Nov. 11, at Springfield Health Center, 100 River St., in Springfield.
Tobacco Cessation for Moms and Expectant Moms is a free quit-smoking class for pregnant ladies and moms of all ages. Come talk about smoking, quitting, staying quit and all the challenges in between, in a non-judgmental, child-friendly environment. Many insurance companies will pay for smoking cessation treatments such as nicotine patches or gum after taking a cessation class. The class lasts one hour and meets for four weeks from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 28 to Nov. 18, at the at the Parent Child Center Conference Room, 6 Main St., in North Springfield. Light refreshments will be provided.
Healthier Living with Chronic Pain provides interaction and helps individuals with chronic pain learn how to manage and improve their health. This program focuses on how to manage pain so you can get on with living a satisfying, fulfilling life. Join trained facilitators and learn tools to help meet that challenge. The program meets from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Nov. 3 to Dec. 8 at The Meeting House at Springfield Hospital, 25 Ridgewood Road in Springfield. Lunch will be provided at Springfield Hospital.
The Wellness/Lifestyle Change Support Group meets from 5:45 to 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at the Springfield Health Center, 100 River St., in Springfield. Upcoming dates are Tuesday, Nov. 10 and Dec. 8. This is an opportunity to use knowledge gained from other programs and experiences and continue to be successful. Monthly classes feature topics from nutrition and cooking to fitness and stress management. At each class, participants will be offered an optional weigh-in or measurements, discuss previous goal successes, gain new knowledge toward a healthier you, and set goals to work on for the next month. This is your chance to take wellness into your own hands with the support of others.
Cooking Healthier for the Holidays — Join a registered dietitian for a cooking demo and lesson on cooking holiday favorites with a dash of healthy inspiration from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at the Springfield Health Center, 100 River St., in Springfield. The lesson will include menu and meal planning, baking substitutions, a how-to for making lighter traditional side dishes and tips for leftovers.
