SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield School Board voted unanimously on Monday, May 2 to hire Nancy Wiese as the new principal of Union Street School.
Wiese, a Springfield native and a 1984 graduate of Springfield High School, said after the board meeting that she was “thrilled” to be joining the Union Street team.
“I’m very excited,” she said. “I have been part of this district since 1997.”
Wiese is the director of the Gateway Program, a collaboration of five districts that was designed to work with students with emotional and behavioral challenges. That program is closing, she said.
Springfield School District Superintendent Zachary McLaughlin told the school board at the May 2 regular meeting that the district had gone through a multi-phase process in search of a new principal for the school. The pool of 24 initial applicants was narrowed down to four people, and two came to the candidate’s night at Union Street School, he said.
“Nancy was our strongest candidate,” he said.
She had demonstrated the “utmost professionalism” while shepherding students in the Gateway program, he added, when recommending that the board accept her as the new principal.
McLaughlin also praised Wiese as “exceptional” with students with behavioral problems and those who are struggling or come from a broken home environment.
The former interim principal of the Union Street School, which educates about 300 children in grades 3 through 5, was Bindy Hathorn. Hathorn is returning to the high school as an assistant principal, Wiese said.
Wiese is set to begin her new role as principal on July 1.
