Springfield High students dismissed early due to alarm malfunction Staff Report | May 16,2016 SPRINGFIELD – Springfield High School has been evacuated because of an alarm malfunction, according to the Springfield Fire Department, resulting in the cancellation of school and changes to the bus schedule. According to a posting from school Superintendent Zach McLaughlin, the problem was traced to a boiler that was smoking. McLaughlin, in a posting on the Springfield school district's website, both students at the high school and River Valley Tech Center were evacuated according to normal fire drill protocol. McLaughlin said the students will not be able to return to the building before the end of school, and that walking and driving students have been dismissed. “Students who ride the bus are being relocated by bus to Riverside Middle School, and from there they will take the normal after-school run.” McLaughlin asked parents to wait until 2:45 p.m., so that the first bus run can be cleared. Students can also be picked up from the Riverside Gym. Students were not able to return to the high school to get their belongings. High school athletics are cancelled for this afternoon, he said.
