WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The girlfriend of a murder suspect who helped hide him in a camper in the woods for days as police in two states were carrying out an intense search for him will spend the next nine months in jail because of her actions.
Wendy Morris, 26, of Springfield, struck a plea deal with the state this week that saw her plead guilty to obstruction of justice in exchange for a nine-month prison sentence that will commence at the beginning of July.
Greg Smith is still awaiting trial for the April 18, 2015, fatal shooting of Springfield resident Wesley Wing on a street corner near Jake’s South Street Market.
Morris admitted to helping Smith get to the remote camper, which was on land owned by her brother, in the wake of the shooting and to taking him food and cigarettes and a brand-new cellphone in an effort to keep authorities off his trail.
Once police figured out what was going on, a heavily armed SWAT team crept into the location and took Smith into custody without incident.
He subsequently pleaded innocent to second-degree murder and is facing a potential sentence of up to life in prison for allegedly gunning down the Springfield father just minutes after Wing reportedly shouted at Morris, who was sitting in her car near the market, about drug users and drug dealers, threatening to call the police.
Morris went home and told Smith about the confrontation and Smith then allegedly drove past Wing and shot him multiple times before fleeing.
The nine-month sentence that Morris will serve also resolves an outstanding false pretenses case that had been filed against her before the shooting. Morris admitted that she cashed a “replacement check” that a former employer had cut for her, along with the original check, after she told the company that she never got the first check because it had mistakenly been sent to a previous address of hers.
