Published October 19, 2016 in the Rutland Herald Gunman robs Springfield credit union By SUSAN SMALLHEER SPRINGFIELD — A man armed with a handgun held up the Windsor County South Credit Union and fled in a car he stole from a bank teller Tuesday, police said. The car was later found abandoned and undamaged on the edge of Plains Road, next to a cornfield in Weathersfield about four miles away, with no trace of the robber. Springfield Police Detective Anthony Moriglioni said the robber demanded the car keys from the same teller he’d just robbed at gunpoint. The teller gave the robber her keys and later told police her license plate number, “LUVIT.” Moriglioni said the robber was well covered up, so an immediate description wasn’t available, but he said police would retrieving the credit union’s surveillance video. Police later said the robber was about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighed 180-190 pounds. He wore gloves, a dark face mask, a hat and a dark sweatshirt. An undetermined amount of cash was taken in the robbery, which happened at about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday. The credit union is on River Street in Springfield; police said the robber fled up Reservoir Road in the stolen car. Weathersfield Police Chief William Daniels, who was searching the general area for the robber, discovered the abandoned car with its distinctive license plate, a “mint green” Mitsubishi Eclipse. Police officers, stationed on different corners of the cornfield in Weathersfield, had to wait more than an hour for a Vermont State Police dog and its handler to respond, since the Springfield canine and handler were off duty and unavailable. But the dog was not interested in the cornfield, and indicated that the scent from inside the car ended in the road, so the robber probably got into another car, Moriglioni said. Later, Springfield police had the stolen car loaded onto a trailer from Hillside Auto to be taken to the police station for examination. The robber left the keys in the ignition. Springfield Police Lt. Mark Fountain said the case is under active investigation. “There are a lot of moving parts,” he said at the scene. He said police do not believe that the general public was in any danger. It’s not the first time the small credit union has been robbed in recent years. It was robbed, allegedly by Matthew Martin, 31, of Springfield, in January 2015. Martin was arrested and charged with the Springfield robbery within a month, and later was accused in a rash of bank robberies in Vermont and New Hampshire, including the People’s United Bank in downtown Brattleboro and a credit union in Ludlow in December 2015. He was arraigned in U.S. District Court in June and is now in jail, Moriglioni said. 016-10-19 / Front Page Police seeking suspect in armed robbery State and local police investigate the abandoned Mitsubishi Eclipse stolen by a man suspected of robbing Windsor County South Credit Union in Springfield on Tuesday, Oct. 18.
