SPRINGFIELD — Vermont resident and boat builder Jay Whitehair will present the free program, "Rediscovering Wooden Boats," at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Springfield Town Library.
This event is part of the ongoing Vermont Reads program at the library this fall. This year’s Vermont Reads book selections are Jennifer Armstrong’s "Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World," and Caroline Alexander’s "The Endurance: Shackleton’s Legendary Antarctic Expedition" – the epic survival story of Ernest Shackleton and his twenty-seven man crew at the dawn of World War I.
The library has been awarded multiple copies of both books for patrons to borrow and share in the community this fall. Stop by and borrow a copy today.
Self-described as a “euphorically wandering helmsman,” Whitehair will guide a conversation inspired by images and objects that connect Shackleton’s doomed barquentine, the Endurance with the history of wooden ship building and with life aboard ships in the early days of global discovery. See some of the tools used to build these wonderful ships. Try a taste of “hardtack” — a staple food served aboard the old wooden trade ships. Discover what has happened to the boat building industry — learn why wooden boats are becoming so rare.
