No one was home at the time of the fire, according to West Weathersfield Fire Chief Joshua Dauphin. Area fire departments responded to a call at 2:11 p.m. reporting a structure fire at a single-family home at 2 Route 106 in Weathersfield. According to Dauphin, there was "quite a bit of smoke from the attic and side of the house" on arrival, and the call was upgraded to a second alarm. Crews closed the road to traffic as they worked to contain the fire. By 3:30 p.m., crews were still working inside the home to continue knocking down hot spots. There were no injuries to report at that time, according to Dauphin. The fire was deemed under control at 3:05 p.m. Although an exact cause of the fire isn't known, Dauphin said that the origin of the fire was in the kitchen in the south side of the home, and may have started at a light that was left on above the stove. "We're thinking the light fixture may have shorted out or malfunctioned," he said. Dauphin said the southern half of the home was "a complete loss," but crews managed to save the northern half of the home. He said the cause of the fire didn't appear to be suspicious in nature. Green Mountain Power was called in to cut the power line leading from a telephone pole to the home. "We wanted to make sure to get [the home] de-energized," Dauphin said. Fire departments from Ludlow, Chester, Rockingham, Proctorsville, Windsor, West Windsor, Cavendish, Reading, Ascutney, South Woodstock, and Springfield, Vermont assisted the West Weathersfield Fire Department, along with a crew from Charlestown and Claremont, New Hampshire and Golden Cross Ambulance.
