SPRINGFIELD — A few weeks ago the Commander of the Catamount Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol based at Springfield's Hartness State Airport, received a call from a former Rutland Squadron Cadet, Corey Lobdell. MSgt. Lobdell is now with the USAF's 455th Expeditionary Civil Engineering Squadron station at Bagram Air Force Base, Afghanistan. MSgt. Lobell was good friends with the Catamount Composite Squadron's current Administrative Officer, Lt. Edith R. Fellows, who is also in the Middle East in Baghdad. It seems that MSgt. Lobdell was hoping that the Catamount Composite Squadron could "adopt" the 455th and was asking for a few wireless speakers so his Squadron could enjoy some music. The Commander put this to the Squadron. Officers who quickly agreed that they should purchase some small, portable speakers for the 455th.The Cadets were each given a $5 bill and asked to purchase a small gift and a card in which they were to write their own greetings. On Dec. 4, all the gifts, cards and speakers were gathered together, packed into three boxes and sent off to Bagram Air Force Base to cheer up some of our military with a special connection to Civil Air Patrol. The Civil Air Patrol is the volunteer auxiliary of the United States Air Force. The Cadet program is open to youth at the age of 12 years and seniors are always welcome and needed to assist not only with the Cadet program but the other responsibilities of CAP, emergency services, search and rescue, and aerospace education. Meetings are held most Sundays at 4 p.m. at Squadron Headquarters adjacent to the airport in North Springfield. For more information please call the Commander, Maj. Kathleen. R. Fellows at (802) 263-5544 or Email at kfellows@vtcap.org.
