SPRINGFIELD, Vt. – Gallery at the VAULT is always a key stop on the statewide Open Studio Weekend, coming right up on May 27-28. Booklets are available at VAULT that contain details on all 181 of the Open Studios and exhibits as well as on www.vermontcrafts.com. We’re all about birds for this year’s Open Studio! Bird carver Philip Morgan will be carving his bird backscratchers in the gallery on May 27 from noon until 5:00. Phil is a member of the Ascutney Audubon Society and will answer all your bird questions, including how to download and use Cornell’s free bird app for identifying birds. VAULT has clay wren houses by Norma St. Germain, felt birds by Sue Carey, Danforth pewter birds, and glass birds by Lada Bohac, Karen Deets, and Chris Sherwin. There are bird prints by Dawn Blanchard, Bradley Jackson, Dolores Kuhn, and Shanley Triggs. Flappers and Floppers come in a variety of species. Gallery at the VAULT carries the work of 160 artisans so you’ll be sure to find something beautiful and unique for those graduation, wedding, birthday, Father’s Day, or “just because” occasions coming up! The new Open Wall show, Country Rhythms, has just been hung and we’re holding the exquisite Exotic Visions show through Open Studio weekend. Find out about the two classes coming up, Photographic Composition with Stephen Whitaker and Smoked-Fired Garden Sculptures and Animal Forms with Susan Raber Bray. Note that Susan’s class is for students age 10 through adults. VAULT will be open this special weekend from 10 to 5 on both Saturday and Sunday and is located on 68 Main St. in Springfield. Visitors and residents of Rockingham will have the opportunity to view artist/artisan studios as they stroll the historic downtowns of Bellows Falls and Saxtons River during the Vermont Crafts Council Open Studio Weekend held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28. “We’re organizing a local effort in conjunction with the highly successful VT State Craft Weekend to draw attention to the unique artistic offerings to be found in Bellows Falls,” said Rockingham Arts and Museum Project (RAMP) founding director, Robert McBride. “We’ve spent over a decade integrating artists and the arts in the organic revitalization of downtown Bellows Falls, and are proud of the integral role artists play in sharing their talents with the community.” Participating artists include Robert McBride, Phyllis Rosser, Chris Sherwin of Bellows Falls; Clare Adams and Jeanette Staley of Saxton’s River; Ailyn Hoey, Mark Goodenough of Rockingham; and ceramicists Virginia Wyoming and Nancy Calicchio of Westminster West. Additionally, the work of these artists will be on display from May 8 - June 4 at the Flat Iron Building, 51 The Square, Bellows Falls. The Flat Iron is the designated information center for the weekend. Brochures are located here including maps and listings of local eateries and businesses. Look for yellow balloons and placards that indicate arts venues open to the public. "The Art of the Resistance" is the installation at Project Space 9 Gallery located at 9 Canal Street in the Exner Block (circa 1905), renovated 15 years ago to provide ten affordable live/work spaces and six retail spaces with a focus on the arts. There is plenty of all-day parking at the Amtrak train station, a walk that crosses over the oldest chartered canal in the United States (1792) just two blocks from the downtown square.
