Newport, Stevens and Windsor participated in the North qualifier at Hanover while Bellows Falls, Fall Mountain, Green Mountain and Springfield headed to Keene for the South qualifier. South Boys UVM-bound DJ Snide posted one of the more impressive days. The Bellows Falls senior won three events — 100 (11.59 seconds), 110 hurdles (15.28), 300 hurdles (42.45) — without much challenge from the opposition. The only event he didn't place first in was the triple jump, where his 40-6 was second to Brattleboro's Jasper Reed. The Terriers' Reno Tuttle won the shot put (44-3) and discus (138-2) and teammate Shane Clark captured the javelin (150-5). Springfield snagged a victory when senior Elijah Pianka edged freshman teammate Cadence Wheeler on misses in the high jump. Both athletes cleared 5-5. Otter Valley 7, Springfield 0 The Division 2 Otters came in at what appeared to be a mediocre 2-4, but all those losses were against top tier Division 1 teams — and the Cosmos had their hands full with 2016 Vermont High School Heisman winner Courtney Bushey. “The Otter Valley pitcher threw a very good game,” said Springfield coach Andy Bladyka. The Cosmos managed just two hits, a double by Cassidy Otis and a single from Lina Geyer. Bladyka noted that the Otters also played errorless defense and his squad didn't have its best stuff. “We just came out a little flat and didn't play great defense,” he said. “You'll have that with a young team sometimes.” Springfield did keep it close until the fifth when OV scored two unearned runs. The Otters would add four insurance runs in the sixth. Hannah Crosby had a solid day in the circle with a dozen strikeouts. She walked five and gave up seven hits, six coming off the bats of two OV players. Springfield (4-3) hosts hartford Thursday and will play a night game at home Saturday against Green Mountain.
