2017-05-27 / Local PTA awards $5K to Springfield elementary schools SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — The elementary school parent teacher association in Springfield, Vermont awarded $5,000 to Union Street and Elm Hill elementary schools on Wednesday, May 24. The Union Street school plans to use the funding to create an outdoor garden space. Nancy Wiese, principal at Union Street Elementary School, said students will plan and maintain the space, while the Union/Park Neighborhood Association with donate perennials. Elm Hill hopes to use a portion of the award to install more swingsets on school grounds. “Teachers overwhelmingly agreed that more swings on our playground would be ideal,” said Elm Hill principal Dana Jacobson-Goodhue. “We all believe strongly in outdoor physical activity for primary school children, especially in this beautiful spot in Vermont.” Funds were raised last fall during the PTA’s Comedy Night Fundraiser, sponsored by Kelley Sales and Service and Gurney Brothers Construction, drawing 200 people and raising more than $7200. It was the first time the PTA held the fundraiser. This fall, the PTA will host another comedy night, with comedy sets from Kelly MacFarland, Drew Dunn and Paul Landwehr, a silent auction, games and prizes. This award follows the Springfield School Board’s acquisition of 47 Union St., a dilapidated building across from the school, last year. Voters in March approved demolishing the building and beautifying the space. “The PTA wanted to do something tangible with the money we raised for the schools, something that would benefit every student and the community," says PTA Comedy Night Chair Meredith Kelley. “We are so grateful for the PTA's generous donation,” said Jacobson-Goodhue.
