The event showcases student perspectives on the theme of "Old and New," and features student work in the visual arts, on display from 5:30 until 7 p.m. in the high school cafeteria, as well as musical performances in the auditorium from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Visual arts students will explore the theme in drawings, paintings, photography, sculpture, and mixed media from this and past years. The music department will take the opportunity to honor the memory of beloved former Springfield music teacher Isabella Erickson by dedicating a new marimba, purchased through donations in her name, and the 4.5 octave instrument will play a prominent role in a piece written specifically for this occasion. Titled "Restless," the work is a concerto for marimba, snare drum, timpani and band, composed by SHS graduate Nicolas Chlebak. A digital display featuring written memories of Mrs. Erickson from former students, colleagues and friends will run in the lobby. Other works on the musical program include new band pieces such as "Patriotic March," "Ragtime," and "The Cave You Fear," old rock/pop staples such as "Dream On" and "Saturday in the Park," new vocal works selected from the genres of musical theater and rap; traditional madrigals in French, Italian and English; and several solos in various old and new styles performed by graduating seniors. Admission is free. Donations to the Springfield High School music program or to the Erickson Musical Memorial Fund are gratefully accepted. Springfield High School student activity groups will have refreshments and snacks available for purchase.
