Justin Gilliam, 32, showed up voluntarily for his arraignment on Thursday at the courthouse in downtown White River Junction but a short time later, to his obvious consternation, he was ordered held without bail. Justin Gilliam, 32, is being held without bail on felony first and second degree domestic assault charges “This is (expletive)! This is (expletive)! I don’t give a (expletive),” Gilliam exclaimed loudly to his defense attorney, Leah Henderson, as Windsor County Sheriff’s deputies moved in at the end of the arraignment to handcuff Gilliam and take him out back to a holding cell. Gilliam expressed his anger about being ordered held without bail to his defense attorney Thursday Minutes beforehand, Gilliam had entered innocent pleas to two felony counts charging that first and second-degree domestic assaults had taken place at his former girlfriend’s apartment Wednesday evening in Springfield. Windsor County Deputy State’s Attorney Glenn Barnes told Judge Theresa DiMauro that, as a result of the alleged attack, Gilliam’s eight-months-pregnant girlfriend was transported to the hospital and “had to be induced into labor because the child was under stress” in the womb. The victim told Springfield Police that Gilliam had thrown her stomach-first into a wooden dresser in her apartment Wednesday evening. Springfield Police Officer Ryan Prince wrote in an affidavit filed with the court that police were called to Main Street Wednesday evening for a report that Gilliam had just assaulted his estranged girlfriend at her residence. Officer Prince said that Gilliam flagged him down as he pulled up in front of the building and explained “that all he wanted was his stuff (back) and that he did not touch her (adding) that she tripped and fell and hurt her ankle but he never touched her.” Back in November, Springfield Police had also arrested Gilliam after they responded to his girlfriend’s apartment for a reported disturbance. Gilliam had just reached a plea deal earlier this month that saw the state dismiss two felony charges, first degree domestic assault and second degree unlawful restraint, after Gilliam agreed to plead guilty to a single misdemeanor domestic assault charge. As a result of that plea, Gilliam was given an overall 6-to-12 month sentence with all but 60 days of that time suspended. He was then given credit for the two months he’d already spent in pre-trial detention before a bail bonds man sprung him from the Springfield jail in January. Gilliam faces a maximum potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison if he were to be convicted of the new charges now pending against him as well as the possible imposition of the remainder of his underlying sentence for the previous domestic assault conviction.
