Vermont Packinghouse Has Received Four USDA Suspensions And 14 Citations For Slaughter Violations, Mercy For Animals Calls For Investigations and Criminal Prosecution

Montpelier, VT – Yesterday, the international animal protection organization Mercy For Animals, filed a complaint urging Vermont Attorney General T.J. Donovan to investigate North Springfield slaughterhouse Vermont Packinghouse for false advertising.

Vermont Packinghouse has been suspended by the USDA a staggering four times in six months for cruelty to animals—a record matched only by three other federally inspected slaughterhouses in the last decade.

Additionally, the USDA cited Vermont Packinghouse for 15 violations of the federal Humane Methods of Slaughter Act in 2015 and 2016. Records obtained from the USDA reveal appalling abuse:

A pig shot in the head and left alive, bleeding and screaming, until finally rendered unconscious An agitated, thrashing cow shot in the head three times before rendered unconscious Eight pigs and several cattle deprived of food, and more than 20 lambs deprived of water

Mercy For Animals has also requested additional records from the USDA after receiving information that Vermont Packinghouse was cited for even more violations on April 20, May 22, and May 30, 2017.

Due to the USDA’s failure to take meaningful action, Mercy For Animals is also calling on the Vermont Agency of Agriculture Food and Markets to conduct an investigation and refer this slaughterhouse to the state’s attorney’s office for criminal prosecution for violations of Vermont’s slaughter statutes.

“For years, Vermont Packinghouse has been abusing animals and lying to consumers about it,” said president of Mercy For Animals, Nathan Runkle. “It’s time for Vermont Packinghouse to be held accountable for horrific cruelty to animals and deceptive business practices.”

The complaints are available upon request.
